My credo
Fix it right, fix it once, cut no corners.
I bought my 84' Ranger 2X4 with the 2.8L Cologne engine this way. It smokes and theirs now only intermittent smoke from the oil dipstick tube and breather filter, and a lot less blue smoke from the tailpipe, and less oil blowby from the crank cases. I was recommended to check the oil return on the heads for clogging. Could my piston rings still be shot or could the oil returns just be clogged?

It sounds like you may have has stuck rings. That can happen if it sat for a very long time. I'd do a compression test.
