About 90K ago, I had a reman 5 spd put in our '94 4x4. Maybe the last 40K or so, the shifter has progressivly gotten more and more play in it. Tranny works fine, other than the sloppy shifter.

Are there any bushings or other parts that are known to wear on these shifters / trannys? If it's a shifter issue, as I suspect.. can I access it through the top or is pulling the transmission required?

Man.. I did a search and didn't pull that tech article up. Excellent info on both the tech article and the source for parts! THANKS...

Sloppy shifter - update...

I followed this article: http://therangerstation.com/Magazine/winter2007/shifterbushings.htm

Used this "kit" for parts: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

What I found from the bottom up was wavy washer, flat (shim) washer, plastic bushing, 2 retaining pins, lower shifter stub, bushing. Top wavy and flat washers were not there. My guess is the shop that installed the reman tranny lost 'em. The 'kit' on ebay didn't include the shim or wavy washers. It did include a flat washer that was slightly larger than the shifter bore. Anyone know what that larger washer is for? Also... please confirm that for a '94 Ranger, I should have 2-each: bushing, wavy spring washer, flat shim washer.

Even without the upper flat and wavy washers, the new bushings made a huge difference in the way this old truck shifts. I still want to make sure it's together 'right'.

The big washer that they sent you is used in place of the wave washers and it should take up the slack when installed on the top. That "kit" that you bought was manufactured by an aftermarket company which builds Mazda transmissions and it's just as good as the dealer parts which cost 5 times as much. It actually gives the shifter a tighter feel to it.

Is there a fix for a FM 146?

I would think there'd be a kit like that for the fm's. I know the '84 I had for while had a real sloppy shift from side to side (kind of a twisting action).

Cool.. I did put the big washer on top of the upper bushing. It was a tight fit but it went in. Drove the truck to work this morning and the improvement is incredible. Didn't have to 'hunt or grind' at all... wish I had done this sooner.

I know this is a kind of old topic. but i was wondering if anyone knew if thee would be the same parts that i would need for my 89 ranger thanks!

The relevant question is which trans your '89 Ranger has. Does it have a removable bellhousing?

its got a square oil pan on the tranny lol as far as removable bell houseign i will have to doubl check.

Ok, that alone excludes it from being a Mazda. I'd forgotten about the removable oil pan as well. Not sure what bushings you'd need for the Mitsubishi transmission. I'd call the dealer on that one, unless someone here has first hand experience.

So i called Ford and they told me the parts for the shifter on the mitzo trannys are obsolete anyone else have any ideas where i could get the parts or what i could do in reguards to this?
