slider pic requests

Stubbs Welding:
http://stubbswelding.com/page2.html
i'm looking at the HD-SKO's they are 1.75"x0.125" doesn't state what grade of metal, but i am 99% sure it is USA steel waiting to hear back a price for the final product, but i'm estimating it around $355 (same as another set they make for a tacoma with the same wheel base) he told me he wouldn't charge me for custom work, only for the materials used, supposed to hear back from him today, but i doubt it at this point...

Trail Gear:
http://www.trail-gear.ca/default.cfm?fa=products&prodcategoryid=16
i'm looking at the $186 78" ones, with an additional gusset set, they are made of 1.75"x.120 HREW chinese steel

Marlin Crawler:
http://www.marlincrawler.com/armor/side/rock-slider
looking at the 78" $169 set, made out of 1.75"x0.120" USA steel, however it doesn't state the grade of USA steel

guy i know has a front and rear bumper from trail gear, made out of the same 0.120" china steel, and says it's incredibly strong, and held up to a good hard hit on the front doing like 50 mph into a concrete barrier...

Why don't you ask them "why are your sliders so much better then the others?" when you talk to them. I'm pretty sure Marlin Crawler uses DOM. The only difference I'm seeing is the slightly thicker tube wall, and .005" doesn't warrant $186. I think you're paying for the name.

Nope, I was wrong. Marlin Crawler sliders are made from HREW tubing, which is fine for sliders. So the price difference is DOM vs. HREW. DOM runs roughly double the price of HREW. Here 1.75" x .120 DOM is $7/foot and 1.75" x .120 HREW is $3.15/foot.

is there much difference in the strength of DOM vs HREW?

how about between usa steel and chinese steel?

the difference between the 0.125 and 0.120 is nothing... you can take that off with a piece of 80 grit sandpaper off of either dom or hrew, and chinese or usa steel, with a single swipe... so i don't care about that

DOM and HREW is the process of how the tube is made. The steel alloy determines the strength of the tube, not the forming process. Now the "proper" comparison between HREW and DOM is that the HREW process -- as far as I know -- can only be used with low carbon alloys whereas the DOM process can be used with a far wider range of material.

HREW is fine for sliders.

good enough for me...

so the method of forming the tubes makes no significant difference in it's self, to the strength of the tubing? (with the material aside)

how about USA vs Chinese steel?

Significant difference? No, but there are differences.

I wouldn't trust Chinese steel with my life, i.e. cage or frame, but for sliders it's fine.

good enough! thanks for the clarification!

They are just sliders, way too much is being analyzed here IMHO. If it were a cage or roll bar maybe...

HREW is more akin to how pipe is made, its heated then welded on and a inner seam then exists.

DOM is drawn over mandrel, and is manufactured to higher tolerances, especially the inner dimensions. Also, no weld seam on the inside of the material and thus much easier to work with when fitment of different sized tubing is used to slip inside other pieces.

For sliders, it doesn't really matter. Just get whats cheap. Its a 3500lb Ranger, not a KOH's contestant.

As far as strength goes, DOM trumps HREW. HREW is perfectly acceptable for most applications though. DOM adds more peace of mind however.

its weezl, hes a very thourough guy and wants to make sure hes getting only the best for the ranger. but as much posting as he does in the fab section i think its time for him to buy a welder and then he can make anything he fancys! i think as long as the welds are strong and you brace it to the frame properly (or at least good enough for what its for) you shouldnt have any problems.:icon_thumby:

it's not so much that i want only the best, i just want the best deal, be it for for a cheaper product, or a better product... which is the debate between the dom/hrew items, the hrew items are a cheaper product, but it seems that the dom sliders are a better deal, for what they are made out of... however, i think the hrew is a more reasonable choice for me at this point...

i don't post that much in the fab section... do i? the sliders are something i've been planning on for well over a year. I got a pm from the admin, on my local 4x4 site, (where we were looking at the stubbs group buy, and i said i'm out, today) that they can get the marlins into the gear shop, which will get me a discount off of the list price, and should make it a lot easier than dealing with shipping to my place, just waiting to hear back on that...

next will be a winch, or front bumper (after my custom bump stops, but those don't really count, do they?) but the bumper will most likely be a store bought, arb or such...

and for the record, i have a welder, but it's a pos, it's a little lincoln hobby weld 110 stick, but my sister's husband has a 220 mig, that i have access to pretty much any time i want... but no access to a pipe bender, cutting torch, band saw, or most other fabrication tools... i do have a grinder, and i can get zip disks for it...

my brother in law also has a powder coater, though the oven he has is a standard size commercial oven, which is roughly the same size as a kitchen oven... so anything bigger than a small rim, is not going to be bakeable...

the trick now, is finding something to powder coat...

this is my welder...

"Hobby weld"...lol

On a serious note though, little 110v welders have their place even for light fabricating. I have done lots of little welding on my pickup with my dad's 110v. They can get the job done.

I go to the shop at my work though if I need to burn some good welds on some thick plate however, as there is no substitute for a properly setup 220v MIG.

Yeah having all the right tools makes all the difference. I only own a few basics (Miller stick welder, grinders and oxy/act. torch setup) but also have access to eveything else I would need to do a fab project. It pays to know people, and make good friends with them

As far as I know, ARB never made a bumper for any year Ranger. However, the company TJM did make a bar and a bull-bar (which is what I have on my truck, see sig). They no longer manufacture either on but some can still be found on local listings for cheap.

You will most likely have to go with a custom made bumper :icon_welder:

i'll have to do some digging for bumpers, i honestly don't have the ambition to make one all my own... even though i do have the ability, and the knowledge, i don't feel like running that many numbers through my head, not to mention that the next time i will have the money for that, i'll most likely not have a garage, and be 4000km from the welder...

sliders are what i'm worrying about now, the bumper will come with time
