Clutch issues.....1998 4cyl 2wd manual.

Clutch works when engine is cold but after 1/2 hour or more of driving it will sometimes stick after the clutch is pushed to the floor and the pedal comes back up. I can shift into any gear without pushing the clutch down again....essentially not allowing me to engage the transmission or drive....eventually it pops free and engages the transmission....but sometimes it stays stuck awhile. Master cylinder fluid is full. Clutch works fine for awhile when truck is cold. Is it the Master Cylinder or Slave?

It sounds like the slave cylinder is hanging up.

That is what I was thinking too...I don't drive the truck alot but thinking it will just need replaced..was hoping it would free up if I drove it more?

Maybe, maybe not. The only way to be sure is to get under truck and look through the inspection hole as someone works the clutch. It should have a rubber splash cover over the hole on the driver’s side.

Sucks that it only happens when hot. That will make it even less comfortable to look at since it will be hot under the truck. If you know someone who has a lift, it would make it easier than using ramps or a jack and jack stands.

But when this happens....I can shift it into any gear....since it is disengaging the transmission without pressing the Clutch pedal....since it seems stuck after the clutch is pressed. Would a defective master cylinder ever keep a clutch engaged without pressing the pedal down? That is why I am thinking it is the slave?

or the throw out bearing is sticking on the input shaft splines?

Being that the slave is in the transmission bell housing. You need to look in there to see what is moving or not moving. You’ll be able to see the slave and the back side of the clutch.

While there take a look at the line connection and make sure it’s fully seated.

The master usually fails by not sending pressure to the slave.
