2.3L ('83-'97) Should I toss this Ranger?


Not sure if this was a timing cover from the old truck since the mounting holes are here or if they tapped them themselves 20210328_140558_compress67.jpg
 
Yes, that above picture has the mounting holes for the 1989-1994 crank sensor bracket

That other(last) picture looks closer to correct timing mark
Rotate crank 2 turns, with tensioner working, and see how it lines up again
 
So I've found fuel pump is bad or I have a leak somewhere. It'll start after about 6 times of turning key to run position then starting. It'll run a few seconds then die. Not consistent at all. Fuel pressure gauge shows it building up to 10psi then falling off after a couple seconds.

Fuel pump? Injectors leaking maybe?
 
On the engine with the fuel injectors is the Fuel Pressure Regulator(FPR)
It will have the Fuel Return line and a vacuum hose attached

Fuel system flow at engine is like this

gas tank--IN from PUMP---------injectors---------FPR----back to gas tank

The FPR has a spring valve inside that should holds up to 45psi pressure at the injectors until pressure pushes it open
So engine off if you cycle the key on and off you should get about 10psi per cycle so after 5 key on and offs pressure should top out at just over 40psi and not go any higher and then hold there

You can remove the fuel line from the FPR and put a towel down aground it just in case
Then cycle key on and off, NO FUEL should come out of FPR until pressure is above 40psi
So if fuel starts to come out right away then replace FPR

If no fuel comes out of FPR then YES, fuel pump is where pressure is leaking out
Could be on the lift hose inside the tank or at the pump itself, assuming you do not SMELL gasoline around the vehicle, external leak


Just FYI
With engine running the vacuum hose on FPR weakens the spring, it pulls on the back side of valve to lower the Running Pressure to 30-35psi at idle, highest vacuum
When you accelerate vacuum level drops but FUEL DEMAND goes up, so pressure remains stable between 30-35psi
And no fuel should ever be found in this vacuum hose, replace FPR if there is, but this causes engine to FLOOD out, so not your symptom

Fuel pump was bad, losing pressure due to the rubber hose having a slit in it within the assembly. Fuel lines replaced too because of how brittle they were and leaking lol

Now the accessory belt. Have no a/c, do have p/s, 60" length belt doesn't fit from parts store so now I'm wondering what the correct belt is.

We can end the story here. Engine seized for some unknown reason. Really do not know how or why. Oil on dipstick, just suddenly wouldn't turn over by hand after turning it off and sitting it here long enough to repair fuel lines.

Absolutely no idea what happened. Had it running multiple times for a minute at a time, then after turning it off to repair fuel lines and whatnot just seized up in the bottom end. Cam is not seized.

Someone has a running 4.0 no title newer ranger, any cross compatibility with 2.3 transmissions?
