SenorNoob's '88 Ext Cab "Build"

I had to get parts out like that. What you thought was going to be a quick fix usually doesnt go that way. Atleast it is out and ready for the next stage.

Transfer case shifter is fixed. I spent 2 hours studying it at work. Then the boss came in, looked at it for about 30 seconds and flattened it in the vice and said go try that. With the slot cut out about 1/4 inch it works better than it ever did on the 1350. Very smooth.

It's easier when it isn't your money involved.

Ain't that the truth. Now I can go on to other projects. Like the exhaust that's leaking again, or the barely functional parking brake, or the skid plate I still haven't addressed, or removing rivets for the lift kit...

My parking brake barely works. The way mine hangs down under the cab needs to be corrected. It is on the list to get fixed. I find the issue with mine I will let you know, maybe it is same problem you are having. Is the way your cables attached to the frame correct? I took these pictures off of a salvage truck for a reference for me. Maybe this could help you.

I have the disc explorer rear so my parking brake is a little different, but should be functional. It does work at the very end of the pedal travel. There is a lot of slack in the front cable. The pedal only returns about 1/3 of the way. I can reach under the cab and pull the cable to make it return all the way. I do have a spare pedal assembly... Just gotta figure it all out.

Edit: I expected my speedometer to be off with the new transfer case. They're supposed to have different drive gears. It is off a little, but not noticeable until 70 MPH. That said the odometer/gallons on the pump method gave me exactly 20mpg this tank.

Changed a tail light socket on the passenger side.
Anybody got a part number/link for the little rectangular clips that the tail light screws go into? Regular square #8 clips don't fit. I tried.

Edit: Just found them on LMC. 50-0507

Got started on a long term goal today. I'm having to order some parts now. It'll be awhile till they come in so I can finish this.

Anyway, Pictures:

Limited slip is working. I dug those trying to get on the ramps in 2wd. Had to use 4 low to pull the truck up the ramps.

Houston, we have a problem. LOL
I didn't even have a 4x4 laying around. Had to cut 2 pieces of 2x4 and screw them together for a spacer.

It would seem the plastic bushings said F this. I'm out.

So did the passenger coil bucket.

Where I ended for the night.

Gonna order a coil bucket and maybe some bump stops. Got lots of drilling and grinding to do tomorrow.

Got the passenger coil bucket off.

Surprising little rust in the frame. Everything there is solid. I went nuts with the hammer looking for thin spots.

And the cast hinge bracket.

It went much faster with a new rock on the grinder. It seems the radius arm crossmember will have to be unbolted in the middle to pry one side at a time off. So far everything else has had to be pried off after the heads of the rivets are cut.

So, I noticed this with the Explorer axle swap in my green Ranger. My pedal will come all the way back up, but yeah, it only grabs at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Oddly enough, no cable slack really for me.

It's weird for sure. Mine hast zero grab until the last click. When it makes that last click 4-low doesn't have enough torque to move it. Pedal also only returns about 2 clicks. Feels like it might all just be slack...

I bought new coil buckets for my 88, I’d have to look up where I got them. I figured if one was bad the other probably wasn’t far behind and wasn’t wrong when I got them both out.

Rivets suck. A torch works well on them, but I’ve done my share the hard way…

I went crazy, all new cables, I cleaned and lubed all of the bits. Still only grabs at the bottom, but like you said, it grabs hard. Weird for sure.

The only place I've found them is Bronco Graveyard or a dealer. Dealer list is $164 each. Bronco Graveyard is $85 but $20 shipping...

You really think I should get both? My driver side is almost always soaked in oil or transmission fluid from the power steering.

Maybe it’s ok? Bang on it with a chipping hammer real good.

I smeared grease all over where they fit to the frame and packed the pocket they have full of grease. That’s where they get ruined like yours.

Thinking about it, I want to say it was ATS spring that I got them from…
