My credo
Leave it better than you found it.
I see products advertised now and then that supposedly fill in scratches in auto paint. Some are color specific and others say they'll work for all colors. My 1998 Ranger is pretty straight, but being 15 years old has a few dings and nicks that would look better if they weren't there.

Anyone tried those products before or know how they work? Are there any that you would recommend?

I haven't ever used any of them, but it seems to me that the best thing would be the paint pens. Some have a clearcoat on the backside. I have seen them at the local Wal-Mart.

I can't see how anything can work for all colors unless it melts the factory paint into the scratch. Although I have seen nu-finish do some amazing things with a cracked clearcoat.

I'm also curious about those products. I've been using Meguiar's ScratchX for small scratches only.

I think a lot of the universal color fillers work on a fiber-optic kind of principle.

It's probably some sort of clear polymer that just appears to take on the color of whatever it is surrounded by as it works into the gaps.

I have often wondered how well those work. I never believed the headlight lens restore kits done a good job till i saw my friend use one right in front of me. Guess the only way to know is try and see. Maybe see if you know someone with a junker or something and test it on that. If you do try it get some before and after pictures.

I'm not a fan of the paint pens. Atleast not the new ones duplicolor has out the 2 in ones. Maybe i just have to shaky of hands for that tiny of an applicator but i tried one on my parents van and was not happy. Guess it all depends on what a person prefers. I know some think i'm crazy because i'm not a fan of using a paint gun. I brushed my truck axle and the frame and axle on my trailer when i redone it.

These products actually take a little of your paint pigment off of your truck/car and fill it in to the scratch.

Try a product like Nu-Finish and use it under your hood in one spot and over a few months you will be down to primer or bare metal.
