well today i took more time out of my day to fix my truck and i set the truck a TDC on cyl1 and lined the cam gear up and boom. quick easy and still check engine light. ran my codes and now i dont have missfire but a p1334 and well the only thing i can think of is that the gear is the wrong one for my truck it runs better than it did before and its quieter than before but still a check engine light. im at a loss i leave in a few days for a 6 month deployment and this tire kicker truck is really making me go mad i dont know what else to do but go out and buy ANOTHER cam gear from ford and pray that it fixes the check engine light if not this truck might be getting sold

What is p1334? Looks to me, just from google real quick that it's related to the TPS? Have you replaced that?

One quick question bigcountry, are you putting it at TDC on the compression stroke? If your not than your 180 degrees out that would explain your CEL and the loss of power.

im sorry the code is a p1336 and yes i had it on the compression stroke.

I can't find that code in my book, but a website I found says timing due to a bad crank positioning sensor or bad cam postioning sensor, you did make sure to hook the wire back up to it right? Maybe it is just a crappy coincidence and the cam postioning sensor took a hike when you replaced the syncro, did you also replace the sensor? By what means are you setting TDC are you using the harmonic balancer or a screwdriver in the number 1 plug hole, or are you doing something different? I have to ask this so don't take offense but what cylinder are you setting TDC on, I want the location not the number. Im sure you know what your doing but when doing diagnostic stuff its good to cover all bases. Are you setting the tooth in the center of the slot when you install it at TDC?

i am using the number 1 cyl. on the passenger side front and that is facing the motor. i did replace the sensor and it is pluged in. how i set it to TDC is by taking out the number 1 plug and watching come up and also by hand cranking the motor with the coil pack unpluged so i didnt turn the motor on cause that would be very bad with my hand right there. and naw im not offened cause if i was in ur shoes id be asking the same questions. im just hopen that the new cam syncro just craped out

Why did you set to TDC instead of just marking the alignment when you took it out, just curious? You could be just like a tooth off or something .

If you take off the cam sensor and put the alignment tool ontop of the cam synchro, and rotate the engine, when the tool sits down on the synchro, you know you're at TDC. That's how you're supposed to do it for replacing the cam synchro with the TDC method.

If you're just eyeing it up, I mean you could be off a little bit in either direction, then when you popped the new synchro in, it could have gone a tooth to the left or right.

--

So I mean you could rotate your engine by hand, and if your harmonic balancer is in good shape, it has timing marks on it. It will say TDC then have numbers...when the 0 is just in line with the crank sensor, you are at TDC. If you can't read the numbers, it's the fifth tooth down from the big gap.

--

So I would do that...and get the engine at TDC. Then check your cam synchro. If the synchro finger is right in the middle of the gap (on the cam synchro), it's right on. If it's 180 degrees off, rotate the engine again one turn and make sure that finger is right in the middle of that gap on the cam synchro.

If it seems off, take it out and adjust it to where it needs to be.

Was re reading that and come to think of it, if you installed the cam synchro where it's supposed to be one TDC compression stroke on TDC exhaust stroke, you're going to be off.

That is how you find TDC Compression when you *know* your cam synchro is properly installed. Basically, that cam synchro is telling you whether it's compression or exhaust. If you are unsure of whether you installed the synchro on compression or exhaust, you can pull #1 and put your finger in the hole, and turn the engine over a little with the key to see if you feel compression. When you have compression, then you can find TDC with your harmonic balancer and make sure you put it in line on TDC compression.

You may be 180 off.

He said he did it on the compression stroke, when I did it I used the harmonic balancer and left the spark plug in it and cranked the motor by hand once I could feel the compression build up I set it to the zero mark(five teeth back from the TDC letters) on the balancer NOT the actuall TDC letters when I removed the sensor the tooth was right in the middle of the slot, I lubed it up and indexed the gear so it would go in into the same spot I put everything back together and she fired right up with no CEL. The tool is really not needed, if you mark the 0 degree mark on the balancer with white out and line it up with the CRANK positioning sensor (black sensor next to the balancer) on the compression stroke then you will be at TDC. Install the syncro with the key in the center of the slot and your line that you marked on the block or wherever and see how she does. Make note of where the key is before you pull it out it will give you an idea of how far off you were.

Whoops I just said the same thing DBP said, sorry man should have read your post:)

had my finger where the spark plug came out.
and this is my second time messin with this cam syncro and the first time i did mark how the old one was and which way it was sitting i posted pics up and everything on here after i did it and you can see my marks on dead on with how the old one came out

Ok then try it the way DBP and I listed above and line it up with your mark and see what you come up with.
