same 3.0 cam syncro gear

DBP found it its up a few posts but it lists all of your problems, have you taken another crack at it Bigcountry?

it could be a bad crank sensor. and it could also be a bad cam syncro gear cause the new cap didnt plug into the plug the prongs on the new cap were to big and on the inside here was a reducer type thing that wouldnt let the plug go all the way on. and yes i have tried to fix it again i have tried several times. i have pulled the gear all the way out and set it to TDC on cyl1 and still the same thing i have pulled the negative battery cable off while i changed it and the check engine light will go off till i turn the truck off and then when i start it back up again the light is back on. my guess is the cam gear is wrong and perhaps the carnk shaft sensor might be bad

That's rough man, hopefully you get this figured out...keep us posted.

Wait wait wait, you said the plug wouldn't plug back into the sensor? Am I reading that right? That plug goes to the cam postioning sensor and it is what tells the computer where the syncro tooth is so it can fire the injectors right. If that sensor isn't the right one put the old one back on the new syncro and plug the stupid thing in and see what happens then. It sounds like they gave you the wrong sensor, if your lines are in line and your pretty sure the syncro is in right then there shouldn't be a problem. Im sure the syncro isn't at fault its just a shaft with a gear on it the cam sensor is the boss of what goes on.
