At least she didn't get bent into an L shape like the Britannic.

I watched a blurb on that today...the way they want to build a cradle under it then raise it up is pretty interesting...considering we're talking quite a bit of weight with all that water inside...I'd bet with a 3.0 and a good set of tires I could pull it up on shore though...OK...maybe a 4.0 and 4x4 would be needed...about 1,000 of them lined up...

Interesting read indeed. I wonder how big the hole is in the hull.

you had some encyclopedias that got bent into an L shape? :D

You are thinking of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

I was referring to the HMHS Britannic, sister ship of the Titanic, which went down in the Mediterranean during WWI. The wreck is kinda shaped like a hockey stick now because she got bent when she hit the bottom.

Sad thing is, Britannic still looks a hell of a lot better than the Lusitania. While granted the Lusitania has been used for Naval practice, her back was broke, and Brittanic's isn't.

yeah, I gotta wonder what the payoff is going to be for this ship. I would assume that there is going to be some money in reselling usable items (unbroken furniture, fixtures, possibly even some of the ships mechanicals are still good) but 800 million? wow.

I doubt there will be much, it looked like most of it (probably 3/4) was submerged.

Scrapping it would be a good idea, a lot of it has been water damaged, they may be able to grab an engine or so, but they could melt down all that metal and build another ship with it.

Don't forget people died on it. It's the first major shipwreck this millennium. You can be certain people will be willing to buy china, silverware, or any other mementos from the wreck. Not all of it was submerged, so some of it might be reusable, but I think the main reason it had to be salvaged was environmental. God knows what else besides the fuel oil could be on that ship.

The payoff is on the back of cruise ship customers... who will be paying more for cruises in the end, to cover increased cruise ship insurance underwriting costs.

Even as a hulk the thing is worth a fair amount of change in scrap iron too.

Actually they have been lowering prices trying to get people to bite, I have heard sales are way down because of the problems they have been having.
