have a chance to move from idaho to salt lake city, utah. my brother in law just bought a house down there and things here at home arent to well. so he offerd me a place to stay and a plane ticket down there.

was just wondering if any one on here knew any thing about the area. i dont wanna move there if they have tons of gang activity or somethin bad like that.

colleges? what do they have as far as that goes? whats the job market like? things like that is what im interested in

Can't help you but I'm sorry that things are not so well. Good that you have family that cares, though!

Idk about SLC but whenever I drive through UT, to go either to MN or CA, I find the strangest people every time I stop somewhere. It's a little creepy there...

Creepy? Please explain "creepy".

I've lived in the Salt Lake valley my entire life, and frankly I don't know why you would call us creepy.......even outside of SLC.

To the OP, Salt Lake has one of the better job markets of any major city. We were just named in the top 10 cities for job markets. Utah is also named as a top state in the technology market.

I won't lie to you, there are gangs here. But it's not like California (LA area). I mean, it's not like you need to fear for your life every time you go to the store. I see some thugs once in a while, but they aren't out to bother anyone but their enemies. Pretty much any major city will have gangs though.

As far as colleges are concerned, we have the University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College which are the main colleges in the Salt Lake Valley. Within a 25-40 minute drive there are Brigham Young University and Utah Valley State University.

Really, I've been to Idaho a few times. As far as people are concerned, I would really liken Idahoans and Utahans to each other. It won't be much different unless you live out in the sticks. Then it will just be an adaptation to city life.

It's really quite nice here. There's a few of us on here if you want to talk to anyone else about it. Here's a link to where we post:

Salt Lake City hosted the Olympics a little while ago didn't they?

We just hosted them in Vancouver and it was the sweetest thing ever. 16 day straight international party... Can hardly even explain the awesomeness that ensued...

Im sure it is a pretty cool place to live, can't do much worse than a bad situation in Idaho can you?

Ever seen the movie SLC Punk? check it out.

Yes, we were host to the 2002 Winter Olympics. It was, as you say, a very awesome experience. The events were all done in surrounding areas, but Salt Lake was where the main award ceremonies and such were. I have lots of memories from those two weeks (or so). There were some athletes that made Utah their home after the experience.

Which, this is a great time to mention that if you ski, there is not a better place you'll find. Park City is only 30 minutes or so from Salt Lake. It's also a great place to just get away for the weekend. I'm not sure if you've been to Park City, but it's a cool little mining town. The Sundance film festival is held there every year......which will be starting here pretty quick.

i dont think theres gang activity in 6ft of snow

LOL, this does put a damper on things for the "cholos". Right now the snow is almost gone after the last week being in the mid 30's/lower 40's for temps. Luckily most of the snowfall has stayed away from Salt Lake this year.

of all the places i've traveled, i won't move out of salt lake. it is impossible to get lost if you can count. it is the off-road/outdoor sports mecca, the crime rate is low, cost of living is low. one of the lowest unemployment rates. I ride motorcycles and so i like the 3 state owned motocross tracks , and 2 privately owned within driving distance, miller motorsports park for everything else. 4 large lakes within an hour's drive for those of you who like the water. sundance is going on right now. etc if you can have fun outside, salt lake has it within an hour's drive or less hiking, camping, boating, wheeling, fishing, hunting, racing.....the list goes on

OH YEAH DID I MENTION MOAB BEING 2 HRS AWAY?

its a great place to live

Well said. You're hard pressed to find anywhere comparable in resources. I did not realize Sundance had started already, thanks for straightening that out.

We also have Rocky Mountain Raceways if you are into drag racing, oval track, or figure 8 racing. They also have a motocross track, and do monster trucks there.

SLC is pretty diverse. If you drink, I hear people complain about the beer. I don't drink, so it's not an issue for me.

started today i believe :icon_confused:

my brother lives over in the bible belt, despite the bad rep utah gets for its alcohol policies.......they're still not as bad as those bible-bashing states

yeah i left out R.M.R. because it is nothing special. i mentioned M.M.P. because it has been called "the best world-class motorsports park in north america"

you should move on down here and then we could have another addition to our ongoing 30+ page thread :icon_rofl: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87321&page=30

RMR is fun for me, but a bit overpriced. I'm into drag racing though, so I don't have a lot of choices; plus nothing to compare it to. Wendover is the closest I know of, and I hear that track is junk. As far as road courses go, you're 100% correct.....Miller built a gem out there. One of these days I want to race the Mustangs out there.
