So i've been looking really hard for a ranger but i only have about 950 bucks...and around here that will only get me a 4cyl beat up 94-97 ranger. or a late 80's ranger that needs more work then the asking price.

i found an 87 s10 about 150 miles away and it's exactly what i want, 4x4 5 speed and it's a v6. the guy is asking 750 bucks. it starts hard ( supposedly runs good after you get it started) and needs a wheel cylinder for the read break. has newer aggressive tread tires on it as well. has a little rust but not that much considering it's probably been a 4x4 beater for most of it's life. it only has 130xxx on it... So i'm asking... does anyone think that this is a bad or good deal?

i think it's a good deal but my parents seem to think i can get a 94-97 ranger with a 4x4 and a 5 speed with little to no rust for what i have. i told them that they are crazy. they told me i'm being unrealistic... it's like 750 bucks and i can probably get it for like 650.

does anyone know any problems for that year of s10? it's a 2.8v6. i know this is a ranger forum but i'm too lazy to register on an s10 forum and the one i was browsing earlier..well they all seem like a-holes.

:dunno: Do you really want to buy a Chevy?

I've only driven one S-10, but it was an 88 (I'm pretty sure) with a 2.8 and it was a gutless POS. I'd try save up a little more and get what you really want, or just keep looking and wait for something to pop up.

a 2.8 g.m. V6 is way worse than the sickest 2.3 I-4 i ever drove. now a 4.3 S10 is a different animal, but a 2.8 is only usefull as a boat anchor.....hold out for a ranger, its worth the wait, the 2.8 isnt worth the weight.

i'd prefer a dodge, But i can't afford a V8. I don't care what brand it is..as long as it's known to be somewhat reliable.

and i should probably hold out, but that might take me months...i don't have a job atm and i'd really just like to get something soon. so 2.8 v6's suck? why

I totally agree. If it has to be a GM then get the 4.3. If it's a 2.8 don't even consider it. POS is too nice a description for it.

very underpowered, i drove a early S-blazer with the 2.8 & 5 speed manual, it just had no guts to it at all. same with a early bronco II with the same size motor & a manual trans. the 4.3 on the other hand is a V6 well worth having, even the old tbi version that was only 175 hp. the 4.0 from ford isnt quite the motor a newer multiport 4.3 is, but its the best ford has to offer, and miles better than any 2.8.

Torque > HP. i should just get this 93 f250 7.3 IDI Diesel instead. it's an auto tho and i want a manual >.>

the ranger with 2.0, 2.3, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0 and ohv 4.0's were boat anchors too...

if it doesn't come with a turbo, steer clear.

And good luck finding something with a quality manual transmission. Good manual transmissions are almost a thing of the past. Automatics are the only way to go... unless you want a barebones POS truck just because it has a stick.

None are as bad as a 2.8 GM. The 4.0 push rod motor is a strong motor, it just doesn't rev up high enough to make the 200+ hp of the cammer 4.0.

I'd get that Chevy, though. I don't see the point of saving up to get what you want. You'll probably have a hundred cars in your life, what difference does it make about the first one? You aren't marrying it. By that age, it's worth what it's worth. If you don't do anything to it to make it worse, you can sell it later and upgrade.

The GM 2.8 is durable and reliable regardless (minus the intake manifold gaskets), hard to kill. If my grandma couldn't sludge it up to death, no one could.

well i don't plan on doing much other then daily driving and little to no offroading. ( my driveway is like mudding atm.)

I've seen a 2.8l (85 S10 Blazer) go over 500K miles, granted the exhaust probably leaked 490K of those miles. (I've never seen a 2.8l without an exhaust leak.)

My buddies old man bought it new in '85, gave it his son in '95. I've done all the repair work since that day. The biggest job I ever did on it was a clutch in 99-00 (the only 1 it ever got).

I love the body of that generation S10. I'd 383 that thing in a heartbeat if I could find one worth modding.

I'm in the middle of swapping a chevy 2.8 tbi manifold on to my truck.
