Running a 3.0 with no cats?

well the light went out today and hasnt came back on. hopefully it was just the oxygen sensor

:icon_bounceblue: Wait before yo do anything. That code is a muffler shops honey hole. I have had the same code come on my wifes Jeep. First off, where did you get your gas? Second upgrade the gas you use and put a bottle of lucas fuel treatment for a couple of tanks. This happened to me right after I completed an exhaust system replace, back oem as well. This was header, cat, and muffler with new O2 sensors. Put some sheetz gas in it and bang there was the code again. I went and got 2 cans of berrymans b12 and reset the code and filled up with amoco mid 89 octane and it hasn't come on since. With this ethanol in the gas you can look for that code a lot. It is bad gas, believe me. Now my 94 mazda has 410k on the same motor never rebuilt and the exhaust is still white and don't burn no oil, but it will burn any gas I want and that 3.0L still keeps kicking. What I suggested is a quit and easy fix. You might have to get better plugs and not the cheap ones. I use iridium plugs in all my auto's and I am fixin to hook up a spark contol box for the extra power and it does help with gas mileage. :yahoo:
I redid the exhaust on it and used a single cat for a f150 into a cherry bomb turbo muf from 2 1/2in pipe down to 2in. tailpipe. It runs and sounds great.
Try this out first before you really spend un-needfully. :icon_thumby:

I know on some vehicles you can use a spark plug non Fowler inserted before the downstream o2 and then you can run no cats or hollowed out cats without the cel coming on I will now put on my bullet proof vest and flame retardent under wear you guys are way to touchy

Yes, we're "touchy". Because dumb **** redneck retards like you rig spark plugs in place of a catalytic converter thinking that a 0.025" spark can clean the remainder of noxious gasses still present in the exhaust stream as effectively as platinum/rhodium honeycomb can separate the nitrogen out of NO2 molecule leaving oxygen and N2 in conjunction with platinum/palladium catalyst "burning" hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide through oxidation.

In short, the first stage of a cat turns NOx emissions into oxygen and nitrogen. The oxygen sensor is trying to read the oxygen content. If I held a tig welder in the exhaust stream it still wouldn't produce the neccessary O2 to satisfy the oxygen sensor.

And for the record, I am willing to bet that a protruding spark plug in the exhaust pipe will create more resistance and turbulance than a properly sized catalytic converter.

For the record, myself as well as most of the other people here dont give a damn if you remove your cats, hollow them out or whatever. This site as well as others cant support breaking federal law. The engineers at ford are not dumb asses and putting cats on your rig to reduce performance. Older trucks with only 1 O2 sensor are not effected by removing the cats. Newer systems "OBD2" will get all screwed up if they are modified between the front and rear sensors. I live in a rural area of Nevada that for the most part does not have smog laws or inspections. I have seen cars with slicks and wheelie bars on the main street. At almost 4 dollars a gallon, the cats send un-burned fuel back thru to be re-burned. I myself want to burn all the fuel I can.

:icon_confused: You sir have no clue how a cat works.

A cat does not send fuel back through anything, nor does it burn anything. In simple terms it converts , through a chemical process started by the catalyst, certain chemicals in the exhaust into less harmful chemicals.

If this is what the cat does, a proper running engine does not even need a cat as well as a bad running engine can and will ruin a cat by pluging it up. In a "OBD2" motor the cat would have to be totally plugged to effect the O2 sensor behind it.

Not to get off the subject, but where does the egr tube pull the exhaust from? Is it before of after the cat?

Before.
