OK here is a different problem. Angie is getting this prob (5-6 times) she has replaced the starter silonode twice. She will be driving and hit a bump, or going up hill and the starter kicks in and engages the flywheel as she is driving. I have given a visual check of wires for shorts. can't see any major probs there. she has a 5 speed along with the 4X4. her last ranger same as this had the same prob did it 3 times.

anyone have any ideas? or have you had this happen to you, and how did you fix it?

thanks

Might check the ignition switch.

Edit:
Big Jim beat me to it lol.

TFI is also spliced into part of the start circuit, but I don't know the likely hood of that being the intermittent power source, but thought I would just throw that out there as well.

ok, here is what we have possibly narrowed it down to. for the piss of it we got a new solinode, rechecked ALL grounds, starter connections. now, also wiggled, bounced, pulled on the ignition key holder/switch. with running and not running. could not duplicate the prob. however, started to think that this problem could have something to do with that BS clutch engaged starter crap.... anyone have an opinion on how to check that switch/wiring? how can we fully disconnect that safety shit and still have the truck start?

thanks

Ok angie finaly gave in and called the mechanic shop she deals with. I pretty much gave up on trying to fix it and she is pretty head strong as to "what the problem is". they told her that 99% of this sounds like the ignition switch where the key goes.... I say thanks to the ones who told me that... she didn't want to believe it was the switch...

thanks guys

I always disable the clutch switch on my offroad vehicles.. It's really easy to do, Most of those switches have a wire into the switch and a wire out. I just pull the wires and wire them together.. There ya go!

I can't believe some shops.... today she went to a parts store and picked up a new in box solinode, that didn't fix the prob (2nd one in under a month she put into the truck) I kept telling her it wasn't the solinode. OK she takes her truck into the shop, and I said that they need to replace the switch... they test it... it works they said it is the solinode, they sell her one for a HD truck saying that those cheap ones are junk and are prone to be shitty..... ok she gets them to put in another, part 30 bucks, labour 60.... she phones me from the shop and says that the mechinc said that the new (under 3 hours old) is shot and put in a new one... I was hmmmm ya ok, what ever you say.... ran ok for 2 starts, then she stopped at a store and the truck was parked on a grade, guess what happens when she jumps into it and wants to leave.... yep, same thing.... started runnnning onnn...... she gets out and not one macho guy would help her to loosen off the battery cable after the shop guy reeefed it tight.... (that place is going to be hearing from me in the morning!!!!)

we hot wired the starter to get the truck to start properly by touching the starter cable to the solinode then taking it off after it was running. took the truck to our shop and I spent 3 hours going over every possible ground short, toook the starter off tested it, checked all wires.

OK here is the question, igition switch or the key tumbler? I have a 91 parts truck that is half dissasembled. dash is apart from before, so I took the igition switch (the one that is on the steering column, not the key tumbler switch. I was about to swap that into her truck, but thought i would ask in here before i do this to make sure that it is this switch that needs to be replaced.

thanks

yes the electrical switch, not the thing you put the key into. As a worst case senario you could always disconnect the small wire from the solenoid and connect in a push button to start it. might even be easier than changing the ignition switch.

oh, one important thing I forgot to mention..... all I have to do to engage the starter is hook it up to the positive on the solinode, and this is without a key in the tumbler. the starter just engages with power, hence unhooking the starter after the truck is running. so it is almost like the switch is stuck on the ENGAGE side of things. so hooking up a push button realy wouldn't do any justice.

thanks

Well, that sucks, but this can be of help - does the problem go away when you unhook the small R/LB wire from off of the solenoid? This should help isolate where the problem lies.

If it does go away, you know that you are getting 12v all of the time from the ing key wire. If not, there is something really fishy going on.

another idea from an oldie moldy guy: switch the battery lead with the one going to the starter if you install a new solenoid again. you could be getting arcing that is internally shorting it out. if there is no voltage on the small control wire like above you could just switch them anyway, but I am guessing from the posts that it is fried again

For a problem that the repair was known days ago this thread sure has lingered! DO THE JOB RIGHT! Swap out the switch and be done with it.

I am now 100% sure that it is not the "on column igition switch" jsut replaced it 10 mins ago and went connect the + terminal not knowing the truck was in R and no park break engaged, NO KEY in it and it wanted to engage the starter and was rolling backwards 8 feet before I was able to yank the cable off the terminal to kill the power.... (good thing it didn't go onto the road.

OK any other "new" ideas on this problem???

piot, yesterday at the shop I was playing with line testers and there was power to all 3 of the terminals, had the starter out on a chair and was playing with alll different type of combinations. I will try that one you suggested.
