Hello all I am new to this form and was very glad to fine it My wife has a 1999 ranger 4 cyl with a severe stall rough Idle problem
I took it to the mechanics that service my companys work trucks and after working on it for 4 days they through in threw in the towel
the list of what i know they did includes
Replacing the computer and crank position sensor the injector on #3 cyl
wires plugs ect
I last night found a forum and tested the throttle positioning sensor it checked out ok I also found that it could be the Quote
EGR VALVE POSITION SENSOR. THEY ARE A COMMON PROBLEM FOR STALLING, ROUGH IDLE, HIGH IDLE, AND WHAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE KNOWN AS A STICKY THROTTLE PEDAL, BUT THE PEDAL DOES NOT STICK. YOU CAN PICK ON UP FROM YOUR LOCAL FORD DEALER FOR LESS THAN $30 DOLLARS. THERE IS ALSO A FLAT BLACK ONE NEXT TO IT ON THE MANIFOLD, AND PRAY THAT IT DOES NOT GO BAD. THAT IS THE DPFE SENSOR, OR Differential Pressure / Feedback Exhaust Sensor. They can be a couple hundred bucks.
Does anyone know how to test the egr valve position sensor or the dpfe sensor please let me know

I dont know how to test the EGR position sensor - but you best bet is to remove the EGR valve itself and clear it fron any carbon buildup as it can get under the valve seat one quick check is to remove the vacuum line going to the EGR and plug it - of coarse if it already has some debris holding it open the idle will not improve - Hope this helps !

I agree with Zamos. Unplug the vacuum line at the EGR valve and cork it. Take it for a spin and see if there’s a difference. I replaced my DPFE and EGR solenoid at the same time for around $100 in about an hour. My 94 DPFE is located on the upper passenger side firewall with two hoses running down to the EGR flow pipe. When I replace it, I noticed the lower hose was damaged at the connection point. I replaced it with standard fuel line hose(still holding up) but it is in fact a high temperature silicon reinforced hose available at the dealer for $20. The most noticeable improvement for me was the elimination of bucking or jerking while driving down the freeway. I did have idle drop too but this was related to the ignition system, not the EGR system.
