sounds really heavy, and like a lot of extra work. 2" x .250 will be fine. Go .375 if you're really worried about it. If you're not worried about your rig being a fat pig, then just sleeve everything. Of course, I can only speak from a rock crawlers perspective.

The extra weight would only be in the lower links so the little extra weight isnt going to even be noticable. I agree 2" .250 wall will probably be fine for him but if he uses just DOM 2" .250 wall and carrys some weight on it it could bend fairly easy. Atleast if he overkills it he wont have to worry about it. Worth it imo for a little bit of extra weight.
 
Twice the strength for adding 20ish pounds to my truck sounds like a decent trade off, now If I just can find 8 feet of 1.5" tube. Most places around here like too sell lots at once.
