Looking to replace my push rods and rocker arms to fix a tick in my 1993 4.0.

does anyone know if there are kits with the rockers arms reinstalled in the rocker shaft for a bolt in replacement?

Thanks!

@ryanthevan

After researching this for my own engine, I have the following findings to share:
• no, I found no one who sells completely rebuilt or new completed shafts with new components
HOWEVER...
• DeltaCam of Tacoma Washington sells rockers with hardened inserts; the are the only retailer on the planet that sells them as they purchased the entire inventory of remaining hardened inserts
• Smith Brother's sells both custom length fixed length and adjustable push rods
• Rockauto.com usually has new rocker arms

Super helpful. I’m attempting to replace my rockers and pushrods with my only knowledge of fixing trucks basically being my education on this forum over the last few weeks.

RockAuto has the right pushrods (12x) and rocker arms (8x) in stock.

Any videos/posts/manuals you’d recommend for this job? Anything else worth replacing at the same time? Any special tools I should order or things I should be aware of?

looking to get started over the holidays. Thanks!

Ordered some primates ultra slick for the lubricant upon reassembly. I think I have most of the other things including mallet, socket set, torque wrench.

This is the best video I’ve found for the rocker arms.

I highly recommend measuring the length of push rods required for your engine prior to buying them. The sock offerings do not account for valve train component wear. There is a tool which accurately measures the size required for your engine.

Once the rocker arms assembly is removed, there is a small drift pin on each end that holds it all together. Removing 1 pin sets it all in action.

The rocker arms are often caked with sludge or worse, a thorough cleaning is in order. Also the valve train (top end) oiling can be improved by:
1) debuting all edges
2) increase the oil hole size by one drill bit size, from a machinist drill index.
3) chamfer all 90° edges to 45°, finish with a light buff

With a thoroughly cleaned valve train, deburred and chamfered, your top end oiling will be improved.

Amazing. I will get a push rod length tool before ordering the rods. I want to match the length of the currently installed pushrods post wear?

wonderful. The video posted above shows how the disassemble and reassemble the rocker arms. That shouldn’t be too hard for me I hope. I’ll keep you updated!

By the way. Every push rod on rock auto that matches my truck is the same length of 5.475”. Strangely two of the three are different diameters. .312” vs .25”

@ryanthevan
If your engine or rebuilt engine has 35k or more miles on it, chances are it will benefit from the CORRECT size push rods, also, if you desire to maintain optimum valve train efficiency, please consider a set of custom length or custom length adjustable push rods ..)
