Rescued 1993 xlt 3.0


As noted above, the a4ld automatic transmissions have bolt-on bellhousings while the M5OD manual transmissions are cast as part of the transmission case.

Please note that switching the bellhousings will be somewhat tricky due to the fact that the pump is attached to the bellhousing and must be aligned to the centre when it is reattached (you will want to use the pump from the working transmission). If not properly aligned, your frankentransmission will be shortlived.

Also, I believe the converter internals are different - optimized for the engine they were made to work with (again, you want to converter from the working setup, not the half-dead one) and may work weird with a different engine.

On the other hand, working transmissions that fit 4WD setups (eg: explorer) are somewhat in demand compared with 3 L 2WD setups. You might be able to horsetrade the 4.0 transmission for a working 3 L one...
