replacing 8.8 pinion seal

Yeah I hear you there. I'm going to run it as is, if I can avoid the hassle of disassembling everything I will.

Anybody knows what is a normal backlash for a rear axle on a Ranger 97? I lift the truck and the wheel is moving 1/8" in the axle direction. Could it be the C clip that would be broken inside the differential?

Backlash is the ring gear to pinion gear clearance and should be .008" to .015".

Some in and out end play is normal for a c clip style differential. If it is a limited slip differential and the clutches are badly worn it can cause excessive end play.

I just went through this with my truck too, but a had about 1/2" slop in the axles, I pulled them both and replaced the orings on the axle shafts and it is much better! :icon_thumby:
