Removing a cam sync from a seized 4.0 ohv

can i simply remove the cam sensor from the block w/ out it being at tdc?
 
i joined this site tonight in search of some friendly advise. im swapping motors right now and the is my first time using a cherry picker. lol. any advise?
 
You will need to put the engine at TDC and get a special alignment tool when reinstalling it.

You can pull the sensor out whenever you want. It's when installing it that it really matters.

As for cherry-picker advice, I like to take old seatbelts or heavy duty ratchet straps, something rated to 1200 lbs or better, and tie two of them around the end ports of the exhaust manifolds so they make an X over the intake and then hook both into the hook of the cherry picker. I know a lot of guys will say not to do it that way but I have lifted 2.9s, 4.0s, 5.4s, and 5.8s like that without any problems.

Just don't buy el-cheapo straps for this. I used to use the blue ones you get at Tractor Supply, but those have gotten pretty cheap in the last year or so, so don't use them.
