Rebuild my b2 or get a new car?

That's a pretty nice looking rig you got there. I would keep on driving it as well.

Thanks man, still debating on what to do about the motor. It has a fair amount of noise and I'm losing coolant (guess that explains the bit of smoking) as well as running rich. seriously debating dropping the 4.0 I have in a parts explorer into it I'm just worried about how the fm146 will hold up as well as the wiring when doing the swap. The donor explorer has a m5od but its 2wd so not much help there.

The FM146 would hold up for a while but you want to find an M5OD-R1 to put behind a 4.0 after the FM146 blew up. And if you know you're going to go to work of putting a different tranny in down the road, might as well do it the first time and save yourself the hassle of doing it twice.

The 4.0 is a good swap, lots of people have done it and liked the results. I can't help you with how difficult the wiring is as I've never done it myself.

Good call on keeping the bronco 2, I drove mine for 2 or so years 70 miles a day on interstate with little probs, cat plugged up, and rebuilt heads, but if your dropping in 4.0, I think its way better ride

Do keep in mind that if you're dropping in a 4.0 and converting to a 5 speed, a 91-94 Explorer Sport can be found with that configuration from the factory. Depending on what you find, it might be a cheap switch into a new vehicle without the headache of the swap. Just a thought.

Changed the pcv valve today, quieted down a bit of the engine noise but its still kinda loud at times. The exhaust smells like its running really rich any ideas on a solution? I've changed the plugs, air filter, pcv, and cleaned the intake a bit. Also I think I have an exhaust leak because you can smell exhaust when you cut on the air and its making a fair deal of noise.

I'd think about swapping the fuel pressure regulator, it cured the rich running on my 2.9L and smoothed out he motor a bit.

I'd seriously start making a plan to do the 4.0 swap on your B2. I promise you'll like it. Are you anywhere near Charlotte, NC?

I think I'm gonna swap it out soon, but I'm about an hr and a half away, I'm just afraid of doing the 4.0 swap and then having to replace the trans in a few months as it is my daily driver and I won't have anything else

Yeah I know man, my last explorer left a bad taste in my mouth though and I just like the look of the B2 better

Well I've been investigating a motor rebuild and found that just to get a reman put it would be 3300, and they said that would be cheaper than having him rebuild it, I also found another engine shop that would sell me a rebuilt motor for 1296 or a high torque rebuild for 1496 and I would just have to put it in. Seeing as I have a 2000 dollar budget to get this thing finished up I may just drop in the 4.0 after all and just run it til the fm146 blows up and go from there.

Ok well I've decided to get a new motor for the bronco 2, the engine shop has a base or a high torque version for 200 more, should I get the high torque or take that money and get headers instead?

If it were me, dude...

I'd to to pull a part and snag a whole motor for the $140 they charge and rebuild it. It would cost you way less money than buying one that someone else has done.

its cheaper for me to buy a fresh rebuild from carolina machine engines than to have one rebuilt elsewhere, like over 1000 dollars cheaper lol

DIY, bro. Unless you need that bad boy yesterday.

being in college I don't have the time to do the rebuild myself, wish I did, but I need it right away, motor sounds like its gonna let loose anytime now lol

Also the motor is for an 88 or 87, is there anything that may interfere with my using it in an 89
