Are there any options for replacing the rear flip-down seats in my 1999 extended cab? Ideally with some sort of mini bench seat or something. I understand that there would be limited seating space and leg room but my kids are pretty small and I figure if they can sit on the flip-downs they fit on a mini bench seat.

I think the seat belt mounts would be an issue since the belt retractors are in the rear door. I just removed mine completely and made a cargo box instead. No one but elves could sit in those seats anyway and the driver had to raise the back of seat to near vertical to allow room.

I have had some fair size people ride in mine which are smaller than yours. Either way they were wearing an approved seat belt, which I believe would be your main concern. Some kids will take right off to the bed through the slider if we're only driving around on the farm

You can custom make one easily enough out of wood and foam with metal brackets to bolt to the floor. If you make the whole frame out of metal you can use it for seat belt attachment points for 3 point harnesses.

I am probably buying this to make tractor and truck seats, perfect size:

If you are only making seating for two, do it more towards the middle and not directly behind the front seats. First to keep them safe in a rear end accident that puts the front seat occupants into the back. The second reason is so they can see better outside and have better HVAC. You can use the small space between the door and inner seat positions for travel trays or storage (knapsacks etc.).

I think you are wrong - they will not fit on a bench. The reason is that the flip down seats have the passengers facing the center of the cab since there is no leg room for them to face forward. So if you have a bench back there, only people with no legs would be able to sit on that bench.
