Rear end replacement? What works?

I'm in the same boat as you with my B2 rear end making horrible noises. Pretty sure the pinion bearing is out since I can move the pinion around in the housing. D: It's been like this awhile so I'm assuming that the ring gear is also in a bad way because of this. For about the same money I can replace the 7.5" 3.73 in my rig with a low mileage used 8.8 with 4.10's and disc brakes (woot!) out of an Explorer. From what I've seen I have to hack off the leaf spring pads and install new ones, fab up shock mounts and then figure out the driveshaft situation. There are also better options for lockers, spools, etc for the 8.8. Of course, this leads to having to get a D35 in 4.10 for the front, and a locker of some sort for it and then... well you get the idea. It never really ends. Keep in mind that my B2 is our extra vehicle, so it's no big deal if it sits for a month waiting for parts or something. Also, I bet you can find a complete used 7.5 to swap directly in for about $300 on car-part.com

Doing the 8.8 swap seems way too involved. Im looking at it looks like 4.10 are the largest you can go. Im guessing I need the pinion gear, a rebuild kit with all the bearing and shims, and a new differential. Anyone able to point me to exactly what all I need?

You should just need the ring and pinion (always always always replace ring and pinion together, never mix and match them because they wear to each other and become a matched set in just a few hundred miles), pinion and carrier bearings, and a shim kit.

Sweet! That saves a lot of money. Hopefully the differential itself is fine. Where is the best place to shop? I found some one Bronco graveyard and summit racing. What exact kit do I need? I dont want to miss anything.

Well if you can find a 7.5 and D28 master install kit that would be best.

I'm not sure which part in particular you are referring to when you say "the differential" because the term differential refers to the whole assembly, not one piece in particular.

Are these quality and the right parts? Im having a hard time finding dyna 28 4.10 gears.

Just my 2 cents but I have done a couple 8.8 swaps, seems more daunting than it is. Just carefully grind off the spring perches and and re-weld them in correct position on top, that and shock mounts. I got the diffs for 50 bucks and the last one I did was an stx ranger ls into a B2. I am cheap and I got it for 60 bucks and it is a couple inches narrower but the posi is a big difference. (Setting up gears to me is more difficult).

Where did you find you 8.8? Are there only certain ones that will work? Its an entire axle assembly replacement isnt it?

Good info here...thanks!

I ended up going with 4.10 just because i think 4.56 would be too much and its much harder to find those gears and most for the dana 28 in that size have been discontinued. If you are going bigger than 3.45 you need a different carrier and i could find one for the open diff so i opted for a Detroit locker.
