Have a 2011 2.3 xlt. Can't find the front differential seal that is behind the yoke. One was too big and the other slid right in with no resistance. It looks like there may have been some silicone sealant on the old seal. The # on the old seal is F89W-4686-AB

Are you asking for a "Front Differential Seal" ? You don't have a 4x4 so you don't have a "Front Differential"

You want a "Rear Differential Pinion Seal"

I was saying the seal was on the front of the differential opposed to the back of the differential. Sorry that was confusing.

I know what you meant,
But what are you telling the person behind the parts counter what you want?

Are you telling them you want a "Rear Differential Pinion Seal"

Yes and I'm pretty sure I've gotten the wrong seal 2x. The 2nd one I got fits in the housing but there is a little play and I know with seals there is usually some resistance installing. So I assumed it was the incorrect seal.

I had a similar problem with u-joints on my ‘98 when I had it. I had to bring the old part in and match it up with what they had. The listings in their computer were wrong.

Yes. The seal should fit tight in the bore. You should have to tap it in with a hammer and driver. Here uis a list of seals for that. (Only pay attention to the ones that say rear) it looks like you need a 3604 seal (18136 if you order the SKF)

Are you giving the parts guy your rear end tag number? That's the best way to get the right seal, that and having a competent parts guy.
Do you know how to properly set the rear pinion preload? It's critical for bearing life and to minimize noise.

No i havent thought of the rear end tag # i can try that if the current seal i have on order doesnt work. Yes in the info that I looked up said it's 170 foot lbs for the pinion nut while holding the yoke and 18lbs of drag. That's what I saw on a previous forum here.

That 3604 seal was the one that was too big. Thanks though.

If your rear cover looks like this

, you have a 7.5.
If it looks like a square with all 4 corners rounded off, it's an 8.8.

It almost sounds like this truck doesn't have its original rear axle.

that's 18 inch pounds of drag. you can turn that with your hands, no tools needed.
since this part is cheap take your VIN to a Ford dealer,. you'll usually get the part then, or next day with no shipping.

you should also replace the crush sleeve.

Thanks I need to double check but I'm pretty sure there is just washers behind the nut.
