Make sure the groove that goes around the cover is cleaned out as well. Just load up the cover, and spread it with your finger. Put it on and tighten the bolts. You want them just past snug...they dont need to be super tight....something like 20 ft lbs or something. And make sure to wait like half an hour before you fill it with fluid. And incase you dont know just fill it (on level ground) until fluid pours out of the fill hole.

Well there are two ways of changing the fluid.

1. You can use a 'suction' tube to pull all of the old fluid out by feeding the tube into the fill hole. Then add your new fluid from there. (Many places like Oil Can Henry's will do it this way)

2. This is the way I would do it,
-Begin by making sure you have a sufficient pan underneath the diff to catch all the fluid.

-Next remove all of the bolts on the diff cover.

-Let fluid drain out completely.

-Use a cleaner to spray the ring and pinion gears, I like to use break cleaner.

-Use a paper towel to remove excess oil that will form at the bottom of the diff.

-Take this time to inspect the ring gear for any wear, cracks, etc. Small metal fillings are normal to be found in the oil. (Especially fill plug because it is magnetic)

-Use an abrasive pad such as a burrell (sp?) pad to remove old silicone on the differential housing and differential cover. Clean cover as best as possible.

-Next apply your silicone to ONLY the differential cover by using a good amount all the way around to the middle of the rim on the cover. MAKE SURE to have the bead of silicone go on the INSIDE of the holes on the cover.

-Now replace your diff cover on the housing and torque them to spec. (Liquid can find places to escape and if each bolt isn't the same torque you may form a leak.)

-Remove fill plug a clean of metal fillings, add friction modifier first, then add gear oil. Fill just to the bottom of the fill plug hole. (Use small finger to check)

I picked up three liters when I did the fluid in my 8.8
