soo... i have a 1998 4x4 offroad package.. yea i was dumb beat the crap out of it. blew the rear. guessing it was the spider gear. it was terrible, loud and jerking when i turned. like really rough. and loud... so i picked up a new rear for a junk yard. it took a while to locate my rear.. cause its drums and not an open rear.. so it cost me about 600. we just got the whole axle dif brakes everyone one big piece. only took about 3 hours to swap. all hand tools in front of my house.....i stopped being stupid and fucking around. i dont go offroading anymore.... now less than a year later... it happened again....last time it slowly got worse and happen when i turned either way... not it just started today... and pretty much only when i turn left... any thoughts... could i get a open rear from a regular ranger and put that in? should i go in the diff and try to fix...
i dont what to do. i cant afford this .. any thoughts ideas or anything... what are the odds of that happening

Why not just replace the spider gears, if that is the problem, or better yet throw a lock-right in there and not worry about it.

classic symptoms of a worn limited slip. did you by chance happen to use a friction modifier when you swapped the axle? (i hope you didnt leave the junkyard oil in there). if the limited slip is toast, they are easy and relatively cheap to rebuild...you dont need an entire new axle.

i cant believe you paid $600 for an axle...even a limited slip.

i was told it would be harder to go in there and mess with the gears
how easy and cheap?
more of a diy things or a shop?

Spider gears are easy to mess with (most likely your problem) ring and pinion is where things get complicated (not likely your problem).

you dont mess with the gears...your ring and pinion stay put. all you take out are the spiders. if you have even moderate practice behind a wrench you can rebuild a limited slip.

a limited slip rebuild kit shouldnt be more than $100 or so.

you could try parts stores, but im not sure if they can get things like that. your local ford dealer could get it (price it out before you condem the idea). any place that carries ring and pinions (check online, randys ring and pinion is reputable).

thats for an open diff. that will not work in your LSD.

being a newer 4x4, you probably also have an 8.8 rather than a 7.5...you'll have to read the tag on the axle.
