So as I was in San Diego picking up parts for my front end rebuild that I'm gonna do with my uncle and grandfather(wants to do it himself bit the radiation for the brain cancer makes him tire easy, former semi-truck mechanic) I picked up control arms and had an extra $130 in savings to use for my next trip. I went to head home this morning when my battery gauge went down and the light went off. I pulled into the Pepboys in Santee, CA and had a $20 electrical test done and my alternator was dead :annoyed: . Bought a lifetime warrenty alternator and waited for granpa to get a ride w/ his tools since he can't drive. total spent= 140+20=160=30 bucks in the hole and no more front end rebuild savings :annoyed: . Im quite PISSED at this piece of shit truck. couldnt the alternater have gone in phoenix where it is more convenient?

wow man that sucks but you have to remeber the darwin law that what can go wrong will go wrong and at the most inconvience time for you like a flat tire in the rain or in the snow or like in your case in santee CA. ive been there before one very cold nite went to leave my fiances parents house in pulaski TN had to be home at 12 i live in new market AL about a hour and 30 min drive truck had to be jump started and when it was started head lights were very dim batter gauge was very low and the heat didnt come on at all so i had to stay the nite pissed my dad off somethin bad so the next morning her step brother helped me take my alternator off went it had checked at 2 differnet places and had it checked more than 3times at both places it was still good and it had over 260,000 miles on it and it was still good so i was back at square one went and had the battery checked at slow rileys and it checked out good cant say i was happy at all and it came from slow rileys and it was about 3 years old it came out of my 1997 4.2 and i rigged it to fit in my 90 model yota with a 3.0 and the thing didnt even have enough jucie to start the truck and keep it going so after an hour of talkin to the guy at slow rileys he traded my battery for a newer one and bam! truck started. needles to say i had mixed feelings of anger it was the battery and happy i got a free one retail on the battery alone was 140bucks without tax. and get this it ran fine before i was tried to leave to go home the nite before!!

Darwin had nothing to do with it...

And most people whould misattribute it to "Murphy"

But it's actually "Sod's Law"

Restated by Murphy it's "what ever can go wrong will"

well i just learned something new tonite i always thought it was darwins law. i just added that tid bit about the bad time in.

you own a 10 year old truck with miles on it..... it's the cost of ownership. It ain't just gas and oil to maintain it you know...

Matt don't be hatin' the Ranger. Even though mine has been nothing more than a lawn ornament for the last week we just gotta remember the good times:D

Mine's been a garage whore for the past 1.5 MONTHS.

think of it this way. if your truck's paid off, puttin money in it for preventative maintenance or even fixin shit thats broke is an investment. even if you still make payments on it, if you plan on keepin it, its still an investment.

Be thankful you were able to drive it to the repair. Mine just blew a diode pack 30 miles from home, on the interstate. $120 flatbed charge, plus the alternator. You did OK. In the past month I've put $1000 in my 97, which I bought from a friend. Alternator, starter, coolant leak, fuel hose, tires, etc.

Come to think of it I've never once bought a car that didn't have starting and charging problems right away. Hmmm. :icon_confused:

Ha! Lucky. I have put 1600 into mine since Thanksgiving. Still don't quite have it back up to par. Getting there though.

Darwin was the evolution guy.

I feel good now, the last RBV I bought had a bad transmission and it sat, finally had to give it away........

the one before that was a 91 Explorer XLT 4x4 with an A4LD, I paid $1000. I bought it from the original owner that used it to transport parts and stuff (never asked what the stuff was) from Spokane to Seattle to Portland, to LA and back and all points in between..... said the odometer had rolled 3 times (it was about to roll again, showed 87,XXX) and claimed all he ever did to it was regular dealer maintenance (they had all the records) and new Head gaskets twice.

I wheeled the hell out of it with 31's and daily drove it 60 miles a day...... new brakes 4 times, new alt once and a new battery........ had an evil lifter tick and I finally killed it by driving right into the spokane river and hydro locking it............ had 493,679 miles at that point...... I would have put it up against any Toyota 4-Runner for reliability

point is the engine and trans were original and well maintained..... even by me. Would still have it now if I hadn't sprung the frame when it went into the river.

I love this truck but everytime I start saving for my front end rebuild some other problem comes along and a spend my savings plus some. I guess this is typical for a ranger with 127,000 miles to need some parts replaced. ARRRRGH still really sucks. I need a steady paying job so I can snag a much newer V6 Ranger

Thats why I don't save for jobs that need done. something always happens to wipe out the stash. i just buy parts one at a time as i have the money. once i have all the parts, i do it. can't spend parts.

Matt, mine has 115k. That's only because the odo rolled over when I moved it in and out of the garage as needed.
