New guy here...Hello....Need a small truck to tow small boat and commute to work. Close to closing deal on 2010 Ranger Sport. Like the looks. Read a review on Edmunds, and they sort of blasted it for being out of date, low tech, etc. Dealer informs me that it will be replaced in 2012 (probably this spring) by the new F100. Do you guys agree with Edmunds assessment? Should I go ahead with the Ranger or would most of you wait for the F 100....thanks for any advice you can give

welcome to TRS

and the magazines reviews lie and suck.

the Ranger is an awesome truck. yes its outdated and small. but fomr most of us its perfect as it is.

if a Ranger fills your towing needs get it. u wont regret it

the reason why i like the ranger. its simple manual windows manual locks manual seats. see the trend. less stuff to break down.

That is available in other vehicles too. My dad's '04 F-250 has all that too.

Personally I would rather have power.

The Ranger certainly has not had a good update in a long time, however I also agree magazines and the media are way out of line. The Ranger wasn't the best-selling small truck for some 20 years straight (guessing it was) for nothing...

I would agree with the others here, if the Ranger suits your needs, go for it. The Ranger undoubtedly will make an excellent truck to own long-term, the supply of used parts is only up to 28 years strong depending on which part it is you might need (the 2011 chassis still shares numerous dimensions and even some actual parts with the 1983 chassis). Unfortunately Ford has stripped the Ranger of many options that once made it an even more practical truck (a manual trans with the V6, 4x4 in a standard cab, and so forth). Hopefully you can find what it is you want with the options that are still available (seems if you're looking for a Supercab, there may be some hope still).

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

New Ranger

It's true that major styling revisions are overdue, but I think it still looks pretty good. Ford has stepped up a lot with tech revisions. The 2010/2011 Ranger has everything my 2008+ Frontier had. Side airbags, Stability control, 4 Wheel Disc Brakes, ABS, I Pod audio port, Sirius Radio,Steering wheel Cruise buttons, etc...........I'm like you, got it for towing a small(1200 lb) boat. The gas mileage is the best available right now(2.3)

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that you shouldn't do it. At least wait to see what the Ranger's successor offers for power-train options.

As far as I know the 2010 ranger has two engine options: the I4 and the 4.0L V6. The I4 allows the Ranger best in class fuel economy but isn't particularly powerful. On the other hand, the 4.0L V6 makes lots of low end torque, which I like, but small V8s compete with this engine for fuel efficiency.

I am averaging 14-16 mpg, mostly suburban driving. I've received a maximum of 23mpg. It doesn't seem to matter how hard I drive it, going the same places my gas mileage won't fluctuate by more than 0.5 mpg. I have a friend with a crew cab F-150 (5.4L) and he has seen 25mpg (once) and averages about the same gas mileage as I do.

Why do I mention fuel economy? You said you want to commute in it. I'd be mad if I were making a $300+/month car payment and 17mpg on my commute when bigger more powerful vehicles are getting the same or more.

Maybe the new successor will get the new V-6 being used in the mustang, or an ecoboost. I'm sure Ford won't keep using the thirsty (but bullet proof) 4.0

Edit:
I hope this doesn't sounds like me bashing the Ranger. It's the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. The cost to run it averages out since insurance is cheap and repairs are minimal. I just wish the price of gas weren't as big of a factor in how far I chose to live from work (less than 5 miles now), or how often I travel to Bismarck, Fargo or the twin cities. If Ford put a small diesel in this truck I would never sell it (outdated or not, it's comfortable enough and always gets the job done).

the ranger is probably as inexpensive to purchase as possible as this is it's last run. the new f-100 will cost more no doubt as they have to recover all the design and r&d costs rather quickly to make it profitable.
i'd go the ranger if it will handle your towing requirements and commuting needs. as said above, parts are easy to come by and will be way less expensive than the f-100 just due to the sheer volume of them. and most, if not all the bugs have long since been worked out of the ranger.
just my $.02.

4.0's milage is pathetic, the outgoing 2010 5.4 F-150 can match it and I bet the 2011 will downright crush it.

I have heard to F-100 is going to be based on the F-150, which has stayed pretty much the same since '04, there is a lot stuff out there for those.

The current Ranger may share a couple parts with a '83, but they are few and not common replacement parts. I would say practically you could go back to '98 for most drivetrain parts, '93 will catch a few more but by then you are pretty much done.

october 15 we may get to see if we get the f-100 or the ranger.

Not really relivent to what we will see here. Says the new Ranger was extensivly tested on five continets, that leaves NA out of the picture. Latest I've seen sounds really good for you power hunger people. Two ecoboost V-6 and a possiblity of the new 5.0

The Ranger is outdated and low-tech for a reason. It works. And any deficiencies have long since been cleansed.

A staggering amount of parts interchange between years, or are identical meaning cheap replacements, and they're easy to find.

They're a pretty well balanced truck, the mileage though IS a bit sub par compared to other options. But if you do regular maintenance on them, they'll last an extremely long time.

Those auto reviewer guys drive all kinds of cars. Including really, really, nice cars. After driving some of those for a month or two and going over to a Ranger, I'd be a bit disappointed with it too. It's a small, rugged truck. It is what it is.

from what i've read, the new F-100 and the current F-150 are nearly the same size. it's been reported that there is only a 10% difference between the two. that being said, you'd be better off buying the F-150 over the 100 as it will still be less expensive, bugs worked out, way more parts availability. but with either one of those, sounds like you'll be getting a full size truck: big, not the easiest to park in some places, larger tires more expensive to replace, etc.
the ranger still gets my vote. just another thought.

The f-100 will be smaller then the 150. It will be offered in a crewcab just a bit longer then the Ranger export we never got here. I am looking forward to seeing one and maybe buying the next year model....don't like the first year of a new model until the bugs are worked out...maybe no bug???

Can someone please get me what people are smoking to think in any way there's gonna be anything in your driveway if you live in North America (US, Canada and Mexico) that will be called F100, Ranger or whatever? The new (90% scale) Ranger is for the rest of the world not us. Ford is telling us to buy an F150, Transit Connect or Fiesta. The new Ranger will not pass the US safety tests. 90% of them are right hand drive.

Go to pickuptrucks.con, jalopnick.com or autoblog.com and let me know where you are getting this info?

I hate sounding mean but really people!
