i do Know they didn't have Ranger packages on any of the F series pickup after 88'.(<- I'm pretty sure?)

1998: XL, XLT, Splash
1999: XL, XLT, XL & XLT Sport, Trailhead?
2000: XL, XLT, XL & XLT Sport, Trailhead
2001: XL, XLT, Edge
2002: XL, XLT, Edge, FX4
2003: XL, XLT, Edge, FX4
2004: XL, XLT, Edge, FX4 Levels I & II
2005: XL, XLT, Edge, FX4 Levels I & II, STX
2006: XL, XLT, Sport, FX4 Levels I & II, STX
2007: XL, XLT, Sport, FX4 Levels I & II, STX

Might be off a little, but I think that is right for the most part.

I am not sure when it started but there was a 4x4 Off-Road package before the FX4's came out.

Yeah, there was an off road package. It was available from 1998 (probably earlier) until the FX4 Level I replaced it.

Also, there were some value package trucks around 2004-2005. Basically XLTs with plastic floor covering and very few options.

fx4 lvl2 was available in '03

Most likely the STX package before it is now known as more of a street truck package.

Now heres a question. What is different about the Splash editions in the pre-97 Rangers? I've seen Rangers with the big decal that says Splash but could never understand it.

Wasn't the Splash just a 2wd 4.0L regular cab flareside with a sticker? Was it even necessarily a 4.0L? I've never had a chance to drive one, I've only seen them around.

You are correct, my mistake.

The STX went away for a few years after 1997. The off road package offered before the FX4 was simply called "off road package" by Ford. It was not a standalone trim level like the STX or FX4, just an option group added on to a trim level. The Trailhead was a trim level. It had a regular cab only, 3.0 only, 2WD only, and torsion bar suspension. Alloy wheels and a CD player were standard, along with a plastic floor covering and cloth split bench. The bumpers were pained dark gray. They had a Trailhead decal on the tailgate. They were kind of an XL on steroids.

The Splash was a standalone trim level offered from 1993-1998. At least until 1997, 2WDs were lowered 1" stock. Paint was monochrome. Power mirrors were standard as well. I am pretty sure you could get either the 3.0 or 4.0, but not 100% sure. It may have been 4.0 only, though I think I remember seeing a handful of 3.0 Splashes. Personally, I think the 1998 Splash is the nicest. A nice metallic orange color was offered and they were pretty plush trucks. Everything was painted on them...door handles and everything.

The STX was a not quite so fancy but not quite so boring level, kind of in between a XL and XLT, aside from the optional leveling kit that was only available for a year or two there wasn't much really tailored to off roading that you couldn't get on any other level.

The Off-Road package was an option package on the XLT from 98 to 02. I used to have an 02. Got you fog lights, stiffer shocks, skidplates, and 16" wheels and tires.
The good-guy FX4 package came out in 02.
In 03-up, the 02 FX4 package became the FX4 Level II and the Off-Road became the FX4.

The Trailhead model became the Edge in 01. I read once that it was available on the west coast and southwest only, which may be true because here in the east I have never ever seen one.

Okay I'm digging up an older thread because I'm curious...
I was just browsin around auction direct and found a 98 Ranger listed as a Splash...
so my question (having read the above description of what a splash package is) am left still uncertain... does a Splash always have flareside beds? Does it have a Splash tag/badge/insignia on it? etc...
why do I ask?
I'll skip the link simply because sooner or later the auction will move on and the link will be dead...so I'll give you what I see...
a black std cab short bed fleetside ranger with a kind of "scratched copper" (wood grain?) stripe down the side, XLT badges, chrome grill, a hitch (which could be aftermarket), what appears to be a dual exhaust (again could be after the fact ), bucket seats, black interior door handles and window cranks (beige interior otherwise) ..slider window, etc etc etc..spare ya all the details beyond that..
generally speaking I guess I have my doubts that it's actually a Splash and not just an XLT ?

My buddy used to have one here in NJ, it was also flex-fuel.
