Hey i have a 1989 ranger with 120k bought a few months ago and was running good i drove it everyday ,after the first 2 months starting was not a problem but recently it was take a few long cranks to get it started. the other day i was going through a intersection and it bogged out and sputtered and stalled out and had to tow it home. i have spark, and it cranks over but i need to pump the gas like something is starving the fuel, also if intake cleaner is sprayed in it stays running, i took off idle control modulator and cleaned it out and then she ran a little better, just enough to drive it around my neighborhood but if i gave to much gas it would die out but still ran, i replaced the modulator (cost me $100!) because i was sure that was it but after i put it on ran just as crappy,so i replaced the fuel filter and still runs like ass and takes like 10 minutes to get it to even run, im annoyed. i was thinking it was the gas but it didnt happen right away i drove to and from work the day it happened and ran fine rite before it happened. i just need some advice before i spend anymore money. i think im going to drop the tank next but don't want to do it without some advice ,also i don't think its the pump because i can still hear it prime i don't know what to try next any help is appreciated, anyone have any suggestions????:icon_confused:

If it cranks then it's not the timing belt, but it could be out a notch...does happen...check to make sure it's set properly...

what should i check before i just replace the timing belt becuase i was going to do that anyway but not if it is a fuel issue right now

Is it getting fuel? Do you hear the pump come on for a second or two when you turn the key to the on position? If not, time to pull the bed and inspect the pump/connector.

My '93 ran like a top for 6 months and started having intermittent starts, shudders while driving, etc. When it finally died, the fuel pump connector on the harness was the culprit. The 12v+ had completely corroded away and I had to replace the entire connector (although rounded out crimp style female blades worked fine for 2 months).

i geuss il take the bed off this weekend and inspect it. the fuel pump still primes wen u turn the key its getting fuel when i give it gas but sounds like its not getting enough unless i pump the gas pedal im going to try everything this weekend any other suggestions

Two fuel pumps?

Don't these have two fuel pumps? The main unit in tank and a small one on rear driver's frame rail?

Also, could be related to a fuel injection problem... Sometimes there are problems with injector harnesses, injectors, and pressure regulators. (Although you replaced the modulator, i assume that's the same as fuel press regulator.) Make sure your MAP sensor and MAF sensor are clean. Check fuel/vacuum system for leaks. Any little bit of misplaced air causes all kinds of crappy running.

the modulator is different from the fpr its like a idle air control valve, and i also have the 2.3 with no mass air i had had a cone filter on there and switched back to the air box wen the problems began but that had no effect im going to thoroughly check the pump this weekend im just really frustrated with it i will also drain the tank and put fresh gas in

i dont have a secondary fuel pump any other suggestions before i tear this thing apart

might want to get a vacuume gauge and check for a leak also you can take starting fluid and spray it on all your vacuum line connections and listen for a change in idle speed.

Did you do a fuel pressure test? This will give the problem you stated if you have low pressure.

didn't do a fuel pressure test yet i need to buy a gauge im assuming. i can here the fuel pump prime every time i turn the key, also if i take the intake filter off and spray throttle body cleaner in it stays running smooth as ever if i give a spray every few seconds, so im guessing that rules out the timing problem, and is just not getting fuel or very little because if i give it gas i can keep it running and it will even idle a little bit on its own but then just die out. i think it may be crappy ,and or rusty fuel i need to drain the tank just haven't had time its definitely a fuel issue because like i said if i spray fluid in there it runs smooth and i can keep it running, how do u know if the fpr is working or not?i will also search even more for vacuum leaks thanks a lot this forum has been a huge help

wheres the best place to get a fuel pump, can i wire in a walbro,or another brands universal pump?

this is so annoying i can get it running but as soon as i give it gas il will bog out and i have to let off on the throttle but if i feather it and slowly bring the rpm's up i can get it to run and rev up like normal i even let off and it was idling like normal and was fine for 10 minutes i don't know what is up ,could it be something as simple as crappy gas and it just settled from sitting, im thinking about just getting a 5 gal container of gas and putting it in with some injector cleaner and see what happens. i messed with the relays ,the inertia switch, and the bed is off right now and i cleaned the connection off at the fuel pump, also when it was idling i heard the pump wining fine like it should, any ideas i think im just going to buy a fuel pump i don't know when it was replaced and my luck that will be the next thing i have to do but that will b after i clean the tank and put some fresh gas in im getting really fed up but not giving up yet any suggestions?:shout: o yea i had to grind off 3 of the six bolts on the bed because they were rusted to hell, and around the fuel pump was filled with dirt, leaves, and rust dust, anyone else have to replace the bolts? i want to know the grade before i go to the hardware store thanks alot

finally finally finally found wat the problem was the 1.5 inch section of hose that goes from the fuel pump to the hard line on the assembly had a tear so i guess when the gas got that low is was just sucking in air im just getting a new assembly because mine is corroded has the line been a problem for anyone else, also is the stock pump a walbro because thats wats in mine? thanks alot TRS
