Hi,

I'll keep it short. Last year I noticed my ranger would chirp for a few minutes when it was really cold. Details:

2003 4.0 SOHC so no CAM synchronizer as I understand
30K miles
It's a random metallic sounding chirp that goes away after a few minutes

I replaced:
Alternator
Tension assembly
Idler pulley
belt

Darn if it isn't back again now that it's cold.

I thought it was the alternator because it would squeak when I spun it. I spun the water pump and AC comp pulleys and they seem OK. Fan clutch seems to operate fine.

What's the next common causes?

Thanks,
Chad

it does have an oil pump drive< same little "noise maker" as a camshaft synchronizer. it is near the back of engine under the intake.

Does it do it every time? If so, when it is cold (when it usually does it) take the belt off and then start it. It will run for several minutes without out over heating with the belt off. Don't over do it (three/four minutes max).

IF the noise is gone, you know it is the belt or something the belt turns. If it is still there you know it is something inside the engine. Won't fix it; but, will point you in the right direction.
