Hey all...To begin, I own a 1992 Ranger XLT with an open 7.5 axle.

What I want to know is, how new can I go on a 8.8 Ranger axle and still have it be sprung over? I've been looking on Ebay, and found some late '90s and early 2000s Rangers that I could get the rear axle from, but I want to be sure of what I'm getting.

Also, what year (or range of years) Ranger (or axle code, for that matter) would include the RABS system setup (excitor ring and sensor mounting hole)?

I have an idea of what I need to get, but I want to be completely sure before I shell out money for something that won't work.

Thanks.

Any Ranger that has an 8.8 under it will fit. You can also get an 8.8 from under an explorer, weld some spring perches on the top of the axle and have a wider axle with 31 splined axles under your truck.

up to '92 is a direct fit.
'93+ is a little wider, but will bolt in.

As Explorin said the Explorer 8.8 is wider and needs perches welded on.
90-94 is drum brakes 31 spline.
95+ is disc brake 31 spline.
(execpt some first year ,'01 I believe, Sport tracs, they were drum brake 31 spline.)

If you are anywhere near Denver I have an 8.8 from a '00 ranger I am selling, it does need the exciter ring, sensor and some brake parts.

Which is really a non-issue because the rear is narrower than the front on the first and second generation trucks.

The only issue you would have is if your tires are very close to rubbing now, then the wider rear might be a problem. If not, dont worry.

I'm running 14" rims at the moment. However, I'm going to be running 15s with probably 31x10.5s, along with a 2" lift.

As for the Exploder axle, I would prefer to not have to do any welding or anything other than bolting it in. As it stands, I found yesterday at a local boneyard an 8.8 rear axle with the RABS system I have for $500. If I can somehow snag the money for it, I'm going to try and get it. But at this point, I'm not sure when I'll have the money, so we'll have to play the waiting game right now.

I've never paid more than $120 for a rear axle, unless that axle is spit shined, I would look on craigslist or something...

I'm with Scott on this one. $500 is a lot for a Ranger axle. I'm selling an Explorer axle to a buddy, disc to disc, for $100. If it wasnt someone I know, I'd be looking for about $200. I'd look around a little more if I were you.

$500 bones?!?!? Holy hell. Yea definitely shop around dude...

Where are you located at? If you're close to PA, Ill sell you my front AND rear axle for $250 (front does NOT include rotors/ hubs, axle shafts)

Mine was $100 w/ springs from a complete stranger. I did have to pull it myself though.

3.73's, disc brakes, limited slip Explorer 8.8.

My problem is, I've looked on Craigslist...and every place I've looked, if it's not more than an hour or two away, nobody's got anything. And I don't know about anywhere else, but where I found the axle at said they were getting rid of everything from '96 back (why they'd do that is beyond me).

And, just to clairfy, I'm in southern MI. Also, I'm not the only one with this kind of an issue--my brother has an '89 Jeep Wrangler, and also has difficulties finding things.

The other thing I've seen, if it is on Craigslist, or eBay, or any other internet site, is it's never anywhere close to me--so, even if I could find an axle between $200 and $300, I'd still end up shelling another $200 out for the additonal freight charges.

And, just off topic real quick, check out LMC Truck--they have both an Internet site and catalog. If you need to replace anything original, or are maybe wanting to do any kind of minor upgrades, they've got a lot of stuff to check out.

Have you used "car-part.com"? Good collection of different JY'ds. Last rear I bought was about $375 with 4.10 but only 19K miles on it. Prices really differ area to area.

Hey all...an update.

I got an 8.8 axle off of a '94 at a Cherry-Picked auto JY in Toledo, OH, for $100. Not only that, but I also was able to, at the same time, do the disc brake swap as well.

After getting everything off and checking it out, it was definitely used, but not worn. I've had it for almost a year now, and had only one problem with the axle, which was a broken steel brake line that was easily replaced.
