1991 ranger reg cab, 5speed,2.9 but woth a code 95 rear end.

I just bought a 1991 ranger 4x4 reg cab LWB 5 speed manual and manual TC and 2.9v6. Axle code 95. Which says its and open 8.8. I did see this anywhere that this was a option in 91 to get a 8.8 with a 2.9? Anyway question is this would be a 28 spine correct? I was going to throw a spartan into it and wanted to make sure.

I wouldn't go by a door tag on that old a vehicle unless you knew the original owners pretty well. Anything could've been changed in 34 years. Post up some pics of the the rear acle and we should be able to help more. The diff cover will be different for 7.5 vs 8.8. Then the axle tubes will indicate what spline count. There are different points of taper on the tubes.

Im almost 100% this is the original rear end. Code in door says 95. Tag on the rear end say 3 55 88 1A24 and judging bye how the axle tube narrows towards the backing plates I say 28 spline. Also from what I've read the ranger 8.8 in 91 was a 28 spline. I'll add there are also the number 83364 on that diff tag as well.

No Ranger had an open diff with 31 spline axles.
