i have an '01 ranger 6cyl. 4L. if your looking under the hood on the left side of the truck the coolant hose goes into a canister type thing stuck in the block. somewhere between that hose and the canister looking thing is where the leak is. Whats this part called and roughly how much am i looking to spend to fix it do you figgure?

Coolant hoses should go to from the thermostat housing, to the radiator, back to the water pump... If the object in question has a pulley on it, I'd bet my 2 cents that it's the water pump you're talking about.

Im thinkin canister thingy is thermostat. and sounds like an old cracked hose.

Alright. I'm in the process of taking it apart. A it runs the temp gauge either reads cold, normal or over heating. Never anything in between. When I replace the hose do I absolutely have to replace the thermostat or can I do that at some other time. I'm flat out broke currently

You'll be fine just replacing the hose. Unless the T-stat is no good.

Found the leak, was the "heater control valve". Guy at auto zone said its a common problem, as you can tell from above I didn't even know what it was. Thermostats fried it doesn't read anything but there's no more coolant leak at least. So on to the next question to make me look like more of an idiot. Where's the thermostat? And of course thanks everyone for your input

Thermostat has it's own housing, the upper rad hose connects to it. The sending unit should be a single wire unit that screws into it and sends signal to the gauge. The one that sends info to the computer is a multiple wire sensor.

Although the SOHC may use one sensor. Nonetheless, the upper hose goes into the housing and when the coolant heats up it allows flow into the radiator.

Stuck open, it may not warm up to the proper operating temperature. Stuck closed, it will overheat.
