workin on a 1985 ranger 2.8 carb v6 timing chain/belt broke wondering if anybody had a diagram or instructions to possibly help me with this process

timing chain?

well does the 2.8 have an timing chain or were they sprockets like gear drives in a way?

They are gear drive camshafts. You might have a broken cam shaft on your hands, IDK if they have keyways or not.

They are gears and not chains or belts. They are easy to change and do have key ways. If it has the factory gears one of them has a fiber ring gear pressed on to minimize noise. That may have broken or slipped. If you buy after market gears one of them will be aluminum.

Mine must not be original then, nor is my dads his has been rebuilt, mine and his has metal ones and they are both steel, one side on both the gears have suface rust due to those sides dont get used.

When I had my engine out to put a gasket kit on it, I changed the timing gears for good measure. One had the fiber ring over a steel "drive". The fiber was a little loose, I thought it would be a good idea to change them. The new ones had on aluminum gear. The big one I think. I suppose if you had both steel gears that would be the best.
