Nice truck PaleBlue, I'm really starting to like those model year Rangers in extended cab 4x4 package form. A guy on one of my jobsites has a 91 the same color as yours and I really like it.

yeah gotta admit im one of the 2.9's biggest fans, even after I had 2 of them with that classic lifter issue/valve clatter. Still gotta say if you take care of them they'll take care of you

yea, mine has the lifter noise but it still runs super strong for haveing 272K on it with 31's and 3.73's. its just a tad doggy in frist otherwise i love it:icon_thumby:

lol yeah my 86 ex cab 4x4 had the noise and i tried everything to help it but it had no balls whatsoever lol. of coarse i had the a4ld behind it... now my dads ranger is an 86 ex cab 4x4 with the 5 speed (our trucks were identical, even in colors except trans) and he rebuilt his around 150k and he did the flattop piston trick with free flowing exhaust and his truck was a rocketship compared to mine ;)

when this one blows up time for a 4.0

+1.

If you have an '89 -'92 with the 2.9, don't spend any significant $$ on fixing it if it breaks.

I did the 4.0 swap in my '89 and it's the best thing I could've done.

Also, you'll find that if you use an Explorer auto trans ECU, your swapped in 4.0 will feel quite a bit stronger than factory 4.0 5 speed Rangers.

Congrats on 270k on your 2.9. Are you still on the original trans too?

I was going into this thread expecting to see some trailer park ho's.......

my dad has 315k on his 86 but he rebuilt the 2.9 back about 1995. he stripped 5th gear in his tk 5 speed twice... don't lug fifth lol
