Whats the best way to boost HP in a 2.9L? my rangers slow, and needs a little more get up and go. I'm not looking for a turbo setup, but maybe a cold air or exhaust? Would straight pipes benefit me? I've seen a couple on youtube, and they sound pretty nice straight piped.

do a tune up.

real horsepower comes from real mods and it costs real money. your factory intake is already cold air and the stock 2" exhaust is perfect for a torquey motor like the 2.9.

either regear or upgrade to a bigger engine
smaller tires work too
unfortunately, shes doin all she can

this would be a quick boost

thats how i gained 30hp and a bunch of torque without even getting into the internals:icon_twisted::thefinger:

What exactly have you all done? plug wires and what kind of intake is this? off a 3 or 4 liter? If it is a 3 or 4 liter intake, does it bolt right on?

Im already running smaller than normal tires for winter and stock ones for summer, and i dont think regearing would be right, as its doing about 2400 RPM's at 110km/h sop any lower would hinder highway gas milage. Im looking for bolt on upgrades that are most effective. just curios, how did you get 3 rep power, with only 38 posts?

buy a truck wit ha bigger motor. theres no bolt ons thats going to help you.

Different truck is not an option. (sentimental value)
how bout intake? is there no cold air intake ford 1988 2.9? also a rebuild/internal buildup could be a possibility eventually.

m-m-maybe. the only struggle i encounter is the price being very similair to a 302 swap. ive seen 5.0 liter equipped cars many a time for as little as 200 bucks with decent km's and good running order. now, my cost for the 5.0 swap doesnt end there as there are other pain in the butt problems to deal with but don't know if the 4.0 swap would be worth it. i think ill do headers, exhaust, intake and maybe a turbo setup if i have some spare change but im sure a 5 liter swap is going to be happening eventually. do you know anything about turbo setups? what turbo would you suggest for a turbo swap?

A turbo for a 2.9? I would want a quick spooling one, for off road crawling purposes. It has been done on a 2.9, but it would be really tuff to get it running correctly

Not really...You can use the same tranny, exhaust, motor mounts, fuel pump/lines etc. So it can be cheaper and easier.

OH! wasn't aware this constituted as cold air intake! shows how much: i know..:icon_twisted:
well do you think an upgraded version would help at all? plus, would a 2 1/2" exhaust be wasteful, or would it help at all. plus, i am interested in more major upgrades. (gimme some advice on what would increase HP internally besides a rebuild)
