I got a 08 ranger 3.0 and ive done a few little things to it but i have a few questions, so read up. first off, ive removed only the airbox and replaced on the filter with a big cone filter(stock tubing to TB and MAF/Housing)...then ive had custom catback dual exhaust put on(single in/dual out Flow 30)...and just recently installed Diablo Predator 93octane tune and running 93 octane fuel(also advanced to time by 2% to compensate for exhaust and airfilter) also removed speed/rev limiters...truck runs so much better now and i can feel the extra power...i can actually run a/c with cruise on at 70mph and climb normal hills without it kicking it...also topped out at 121mph the other day :D...nuff rambling, to the mod questions...ive been thinking about adding the following mods from Underdog Performance: Screamin Demon coilpack, underdrive pulley for crankshaft and alt, and a larger straighter air intake tube from MAF to TB.

Question #1: I know the underdrive will give about 8hp to a stock 3.0, im hoping to get maybe 10hp with my other mods but mainly ive heard that on some ranger 3.0's that the underdrive will cause it to overheat/cooling problems because of fan speed?

Question #2: The screamin Demon coilpack i know will add better more power spark across the board, but will it really be worth it to get it or will it actually make a difference in my case?

Question #3: Is there any other mods that are recommened for me to do without breaking into the engine(im still under warranty)??

1 - Why do you feel you need the alt pulley? I've got just the crank pulley and kickin 600rms watts and my lights don't dim. As for overheating, they're a lot of people that run em in the south with no problems.

2 - Some people will say yes, but I think it is in their heads. Unless you have an ignition problem, IMO you're waisitng money

3 - Have you read mention of swapping mechanical fan out for an electric? That can be a pretty cheap mod if you're good with tools. Do a search for more info.

Goodluck

if going w/ efans id keep the factory fan and install a pusher efan if your worried about cooling. the underdrive pulleys also have a kit for overdriving the rest if you want them to be installed as well. the coil pack doesnt help unless your adding extra strain that may cause misfire for the engine (boosting/nos) otherwise its a waste of time and money. hope your warranty isnt skrewd so far since any mods to the engine (airfilter/exhaust) other than factory will void it in some cases.

rurouni20xx, I notice you're from Natchitoches, LA. I find that interesting since used to live in Nacogdoches, TX. I'm sure you know the old Indian story regaurding these two towns. :icon_cheers:

ok well then i guess ill throw out the coil pack if it wont do much...and the alt pulley comes in the kit i wanna buy...it includes the underdrive crank and alt, and the water pump pulley and a new belt...ive actually thought of doin electric fans before but im not sure how much that would help power wise on this small motor..i know it helped a lot on my big bronco w/351 when i did fans

Tisk Tisk, what a mess. Pulling in warm air from the engine bay (through your open element filter) just costed you power. That warmer air means more excited molecules than cooler air (where factory pulls in air). Those excited molecules, especially the oxygen molecules, are now farther apart, so to say. This less dense air means that you have less oxygen to burn. And yes, that decrease in oxygen results in lower performance and efficiency.

Yes, the underdrive pullies claim 8hp. I purchased one and it does make a notable difference, but not 8hp. I don't understand what you mean when you say you are looking at closer to 10hp since you have other mods? The underdrive pully does not help your engine make more horsepower, but aids in freeing up more usable horsepower otherwise consumed by accessories. So no matter what you do to that engine of yours, the UDP will not make any more power than if it were installed on a stock engine.

The coil pack won't do you anything. You're factory ignition is powerful enough to overcome the resistance in the cylinder and create a spark. This spark is all you need to start your flamefront. A hotter spark will not give you more power. It will, however, decrease the life of some of your ignition components. When you increase the cylinder pressure, either by higher compression, forced induction, or nitrous then you can upgrade the ignition and feel a difference. Otherwise its useless. If it worked, ford would have done this mod factory since it wouldn't be costing them much more.

So, my advice? Put that stock airbox back on for starters. Port/polish your intake manifold. This'll cost you a couple of gaskets and less than $20 in sanding drums if you have a dremel or die grinder. Rogue 1.7:1 roller rockers make quite a difference in power, temps, and they quiet the engine noise some. Your truck is only a 2wd so it shouldn't cost much to regear to 4.10:1 ring and pinions (if your truck doesn't have this already). After this, headers will make a slight improvement.

Congratulations, kiss your warranty good by!!!!:D:D

You now have converted an efficient CAI, to a HAI!!!!

moved here 2 yrs ago, and you are prob very few ppl that know how to pronounce natchitoches as nakatish, since it was named after the nakatosh indians. i dont know much about the history here, my mother is from alexandria and my father is from homer ny, military family. i was born on fort polk and have lived a good many places but between 3 yrs in germany, 2 yrs here, 1 yr in alexandria and 11 yrs in slagle/simpson area thats the longest ive lived in places, i did live in jax fla and honesdale pa a month each. been around the block to say the least. but back to the original discussion, all the above mods gofast says will work indefinitely, but again the warranty would be skrewd, if its not already.

un less you have over 36000 miles on it id suck it up,

ok so then i need to do a CAI...wuts the best way to do it or is there a good kit...like the k&n kit is just the same as what i have but its k&n...still sucks hot engine air...so ideas?

they're knocking you for removing your factory cold air intake and putting a cone filter on that sucks hot engine air. if you want to go back to a cold air, put your factory box back on. dont waste your money like i did on a k&n, it isnt a CAI.

+1............

You can upgrade the air intake system by increasing the diameter of the tube that goes from the stock filter box to the Throttle Body. But don't You EVER, NEVER, NO MATTER WHO TELLS YOU WHAT, Put an air filter inside the engine bay unless it has a full supply af fresh air from the outside fo the engine bay.:annoyed:
Your vehicule already comes with a cold air intake system from factory. DFWI (Don't **** With It). You are only wasting ponies.
Oh! And kiss that warranty good bye...:bawling:
By the way... K&N makes a drop in filter that goes in your original filter box. Just remember: Do the filter oiling procedure according to the manufacturers instructions or else...

NOT TRUE!!! With the newer MAF sensors, increasing the intake tube diameter will decrease the air velocity, which screws up the MAF sensor measurements! If that intake tube needed to be a larger diameter, the manufacturers would have made it bigger!! Just more BS from manufacturers like K&N!!!

They sell You a MAF for this mod You dummmy. Do your homework or sit at the corner with a cone on your head...:thefinger:
And this mod is wothy off only if you install 1.7:1 ratio rockers.
