Question Regarding Dumped Items

One of my customers makes these cute cute decorative pigs out of empty refrigerant bottles in his retirement. They look like a smaller bbq grill propane bottle. Another customer of mine was ripping out an old fence and found a refrigerant bottle in the ditch. Being a former hog farmer that used to be really into it he eagerly brought it to customer number one to have made into a pig. It felt empty, he drilled a hole into it to secure a leg and the thing had a fair amount of anhydrous ammonia (from meth heads) in it. :icon_surprised:

Be carefull what you find because it is hard to tell what the dumpers intentions where. Also be wary that whatever your treasures are is not stolen.

This is why I only goto certain locations to pick stuff up as it is well known to many people who have lived in the area that it used to be the county dump, so many think that dumping their junk up there is still the right place LOL. I really watch close as to what I pick up. For example any wiring I will not touch it at all don't care what type it is, how it looks, etc I just don't touch it because of all the thieves stealing copper wiring. I also don't touch any appliances that contain refrigerants, because unless you pay a hefty price to have someone come out and certify in writing that it has been evacuated of refrigerant the scrap yard won't accept them.

That's a pretty smart idea. There is so much copper thieving done around here it's crazy. Somebody pulled up to our business a couple of months ago, broke into the breaker boxes and took a bunch of wire off of the side of our building. $5000 in wire replacement alone - without labor. Neighboring business has had their A/C units stolen 3 times.

I just stick to picking up literally junk items, like aluminum cans, brass ammo cases, etc. The only reason I grabbed the tires was I need tires, and only did it after some comments on here mentioning talking to the local police first which after I did, realized it was a waste of time in the end, but at least they know I was cleaning it up not dumping it, I will continue to ask permission first though to cover my a**, and from now on will take pictures of the site before and after as well.

We had a lot of A/C units stolen in my city last summer. If there was a vacant house, it was about a 100% guarantee the A/C unit and all the copper piping was gone.

There is a newer tire shop down the street from me. The were taking old tires and getting rid of them for people. Well this lady was complaining of some tires that got dumped behind an empty house and called the local news station. Well the news station followed a truck that was dumping the tires back to the newer tire shop. Turns out they were the ones doing it. They got fined like 10k i think.

Problem is with all the wire thieves around it makes picking up copper wire a no-no. Just not worth the risk of someone saying no you stole that you didn't pick that up.
