Question on Installing Harmonic Balancer Sleeve

I got a new "sleeve" to put on the harmonic balancer shaft before I put the HB back on the crankshaft. I bought it from O'Reilly's. The box is labeled "National Wheel End Components" and "FEDERAL MOGUL" and MOOG ENGINEERING. The instructions say to "apply a light layer of NON-HARDENING SEALANT to the inside surface of the sleeve. My question is: What do they mean by "non-hardening sealant" ? What brand do you Ranger Rebuilders recommend?

It comes with a new woodruff key and a steel "cup" to tap it on for installation. Last time I changed the timing chain, I just brought the HB to a machine shop and had them press on the sleeve. I think the sleeve slipped or moved out of position as the engine end of this sleeve has teeth marks on it from the timing chain. Also it is no longer all the way at the bottom (the pulley end of the shaft), which IIRC ,where it was when the machine shop pressed it on. The old sleeve has about 60K miles on it.

Another weird thing I found was some play in the HB , about 1/32" or so. The bolt holding the HB to the crankshaft was on really tight. What could cause it to have play in it? Would this play have anything to do with the sleeve moving out of position? I am ass-uming that this has something to do with my Ranger dieing on me on the way to work.

All help is truly appreciated.

Anyone Ever Seen A Slipped Harmonic Balancer?

I got my question answered about the Harmonic Balancer Sleeve. I'm learning. I brought it to a mechanic to install the sleeve on the new balancer. He taught me that the sleeves are only for old balancers with wear on them, not new ones. I'm such a dumb-ass. He did say that the old balancer looked as if it had slipped. He said that the rubber sometimes goes bad and the balancer actually slips and changes position on the pulley. I had asked him why the old and new balancer timing marks were different. They were not in the same position in relation to the spot that has the "missing" tooth or teeth.

Has anyone every seen a "slipped" harmonic balancer before?

Thanks,

I have seen them slip before. It is always fun trying tp figure those ones out because you have fuel and spark but it wont run.

Replace the bolt. It's a TTY bolt.
