Installing new gears, question.. Please help!

Todd hit the nail on the head. Start your install reusing all the stock shims as you took it apart. Run a pattern and go from there.

Get the old ring gear off with a drift and hammer or a plastic deadblow on the sides of the ring gear. To install, start it on there straight and tap it down using the plastic deadblow, then pull it in using the bolts. Its not that tight of a fit at all.

thanks guys......all this info will help me narrow down the number of times I have to re-do the install....Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahhaahhahhahaaaa..........

It's rough being stupied & on meds too.....good news is.....the meds keep me from getting foaming-at-the-mouth-mad....waaaahahahhahhaha...weeeze...

You never fail to crack me up man.......... You always bring a rise with your text...

Yes you can buy crush sleeves separately. I chose to go with a crush sleeve eliminator when I built my 8.8, reusable and it doesn't take a stupid amount of torque to crush.

You're not supposed to do this. Throwing the carrier in the freezer for an hour or two works well.

where'd you find a crush sleeve elim?

good idea on throwing the carrier in the freezer, i'll have to remember that

^
from what I can tell, no....i put the carrier from my open diff ranger 8.8 into the diff of my explorer 8.8 and it looked like it was not quite as wide as the explorer open carrier.

the axleshafts in rangers are also a smaller diameter than the shafts in a explorer. so the bearings for an explorer would need to be bigger.

i could be wrong though, might wanna wait for someone else to chime in

Thanks Eddie. I kinda figured so. Reason I ask, is because I found What's described as just "Ford 8.8" install kit for $49.99 online, but it doesn't list Ranger, or Explorer...

link?

i always double check to make sure it says for the 31 spline 8.8 when i'm buying something....just to be sure

You guys might PM Nathan. A few months ago he had did his own install and posted some pics. I don't know how much he's on here after his Ranger got wrecked though.

sweet, thanks man and thank you for your help as well :icon_thumby:

$59.99 shipped aint bad...never heard of KOYO, they any good?

and did you figure out if it fit the explorer 8.8?

in the end, i think i'm just gonna replace the outer pinion bearing in mine.

No problem bud. Glad I could help. I'm going to give them a call here in a bit, and find out what the deal is.

I've heard of Koyo, but not sure what kind of reviews they get. I'm willing to give em a shot though. Timken would be nice, but I don't have the $200 to spend per diff. Ha ha

I just got off the phone with Randy's Ring and Pinion, and they said they are all the same. Ford 8.8 install kits apply to both. They also said the Koyo bearings are great. Ford, Dana, and Spicer, all switched to Koyo, and dropped Timken.

thanks for the update man, i might have to pick one of those kits up next paycheck.

i'm still a little skeptical though, i dont understand why my ranger8.8 open carrier wouldnt fit in my explorer 8.8 diff housing. i may have to take the bearings off and compare

Could that be due to differences in spline counts?
