I have looked and looked trying to find out what manual tranny is in the newer f-150s/250s because I'm going to put a 5.4l in my '89 F150 4x4. Will the transmission that is currently in the truck work with the 5.4 or do I need a whole different trans and transfer case? The f150 currently has an EFI 302 in it. Thanks for you input guys.

trans swap

what year is the donor and what motor is in it... then i can tell you...:headbang:

I don't have a doner quite yet. All I know is that I want a 5.4L and so if there is a 5.4 that will marry up to the trans that is currently in the truck (which is OEM) then that is what I will try to find. I know some of you guys are super geniuses when it comes to these things and I certainly am not. I love spinnin' wrenches though and the more I know the better off I am. I am also not opposed to getting a newer trans/transfer case, just wondering if it would work without it.

The current transmission in the truck will not bolt up to a 4.6/5.4 modular engine.

The f150's with the 4.6 and 5.4 will use a Mazda M5OD, the f250/350 with the 5.4 will have a ZF 6 speed.

The transfer case in the f150 will be a Borg Warner 44-06 and the f250/350 will get a New Venture Gear transfercase.

sasqutryda is on the monney thats why you'd need a donor and i'm almost certain the 5.4 has an auto availible for it too...good luck:icon_thumby:

The auto in the f150 will be a 4r70e, 4r75e, 4r70w, or 4r100 depending on the year of the donor.

The f250/350 will have a TorqShift or 4r100 depending on the year of the donor.

Also, some early (97-98) 5.4s came with the old E4OD, albeit with a modular bolt pattern. I know because my brother has one that's about to kick the bucket.

And I believe the 5.4 did not come with a manual in the F150s. But there is no reason a M5OD-R2 connected to a 4.6 wouldn't work, because the 4.6 and 5.4 are identical, as far as connected a transmission is concerned.

I would look for a 3 valve 5.4L and a ZF 6 speed. My old man had a 2000 F150 with the 2 valve engine and around 100K it developed a timing chain rattle. The 3 valve engines were supposed to clear this issue up (and a big boost in torque/power)

Yeah, and an even bigger boost in size and cost.

You could build a very serious 5.8L / 351 for what it would cost by the time you had a running 3-valve in an 89 F150.
