i just got back from pep boys. they did a a/c performance check. i was told the compressor is loud and the bearing is shot. which i agree. i was also told that the drier/acumulator would need to be swapped out once the system is opened. ok, thats fine. they said the system holds pressure just fine. problem is they want almost $700 to fix my a/c. i said screw that, paid for the a/c check and left. i can get a brand new compresor w/ clutch and accumulator for $223 shipped to my door. i know someone that can evacuate the system properly and it looks easy enough to where i can install the new parts. then ill take it to a shop and have it professionaly recharged. anyone see a problem with me attempting to do this myself? any parts that i should also replace while im at it? thanks

oh and i think im going to need the o-ring/gasket seal kit. and im thinking of going with the automatic adjusting orifice tube. that would bring my total to $266 shipped

No problem doing it yourself. As long as you can get it evacuated properly it should be fine. For best practices you should leave drier in box until your ready to use. Make it the last part to install and as soon as it is drive to get it charged don't stop for a beer on the way either.

Also make sure you have the thing flushed out. When the bearings go bad and the compressor gets loud, you have shavings in there. I have seen more than one person come rolling in to a shop because that accumulated crap in the system killed the new compressor.

alright, so make apointment to get it flushed and charged the same day as i install everything. am i missing any parts?

I'd budget for a new condenser core. Due to it's serpentine-flow design, it's extremely difficult to get all the debris flushed out of there. A new core is much cheaper than a new compressor. The evaporator core should be OK to flush however.
