right now im in the process of pulling my 2.9 so far i have the radiator out, engine harness disconnected, and power steering pump off to the side.

now my question is... is there any special technique to getting the motor unbolted from the tranny? or am i better off just pulling them both at the same time? if i pull them bolt what all do i have to disconnect?

thanks!

Pulling piece at a time is easier space wise. Drop front and rear shafts. Unbolt tranny and and cross member. Remove tranny/t-case. Disconnect harness plugs and accessories. Pull motor. Drink beer. You can also drink beer before, during, or after any of the steps involved. Have fun.

If you take the cross brace out for the tranny let it hang down or even jack up the front of the motor you can get to the bolts on the top of the tranny.I leave the nuts on the motor mounts loose when I do this.I like anything 500lbs and above my head secured. You can take engine and tranny out as one piece but you need a helper one of the screw adjusters to change the tilt and to be able to lift the motor well above the front.

yeah, you guys amaze me how well ... good both works, but I Prefair unbolted the transmission before removing the engine, otherwise you need the tilt tools of the engine crane..

Top bolts are also easily accessed from the top. Trail's way works well, my way works well. I find it to be largely a matter of personal preference.

Also, take the hood off.

alright so i took the cross brace off for the tranny. got the bolts out from the tranny. theres only 6? well im ready to pull the motor come morning i spose. anything i should know about separating the engine from the transmission? and yes the hood is already off it was the first thing i did.

it doesnt matter which you do either both or just the motor if you have the tranny bolts out and also have everything disconnected and motor mounts off then it should be a striaght pull up you dont need to touch any tranny stuff

All you really need to do is remove the clutch fan, shroud and radiator. Drop the trans X member and it will come out. Use exhaust bolts on either side to mount your chain to and one chain bolted to the front of a head to create your angle and it will come out with a little coaxing all in one piece. If I could get a 302 with c4 out just by taking off the fan and water pump pulley I know you can get that 2.9 out together.
Did it to mine when I replaced the 2.9 with a 302 as a matter of fact.

All ways mentioned work. As adsm08 said its a matter of preference.
Personally I prefer my way. It seems a lot easier to me.

thanks guys. im just pullin the motor by itself. waiting for my neighbor to bring me his chain hoist then i get to start pulling the little devil.

Getting engine and trans apart can sometimes be a bit tricky, corrosion and all. Small pry bar or big screw driver is a good idea.

The transfer case will come out intact with the trans and motor as well BTW. Forgot to mention that in my earlier post. The last vehicle I pulled the entire drive line out as a whole was an 88 BII 2wd 5spd mitts. ( 2 years ago) BUT they have a dummy transfer case with no guts. Thats how I know it will come out in one piece if you remove the trans X member. It WILL bump the trans tunnel seem so you will have to twist it a little. As well the front of the engine WILL bump against the top of the core support making it look like its a no go. But as I and others said it just a matter of wiggling her the right way and good leverage.
Wish you luck bro. You can do it by your self. Just take your time to carefully look things over before during and after before you yank to hard.

as mentioned above the trans likes to stick to the block. A rubber mallet, thick steel putty knife and a large flat head screw driver are your friends :)

i got it out without much trouble. the engine came right off the trans didnt need to pry it at all. thanks for your help everyone.

we had a pretty bad tranny fluid spill when we pulled the motor out. had to do all that just to replace a freekin oil pump. took one look at the pickup screen and knew it was the source of my problems. so instead of just replacing the pickup screen ill just slam and new oil pump on it since the motor is out. but if i get a job before I start putting the 2.9 back in im gonna try and put a 302 in instead.

Did you unbolt the tourque convert before removing the engine, or is this were the Trans fluid came from? If you did not you may want to replace the front trans seal before reinstalling the converter.
