Project ST- yet another V8 swap....

2001 early model explorer sport 2 dr v8 swap

I'm installing a 2000 mercury mountaineer 5.0 engine and 4r70w trans in to my 2001 explorer sport 2dr & my question is do the harnesses not match like the other 4dr models. I swapped in the engine & transmission & got it running, but the battery harness doesn't match. Also the speedometer doesn't work and the transmission doesn't engage in gear like it should . Any ideas as to wiring I needed to swap out? Maybe the gem module? Thanks in advance Was thinking maybe a speed sensor issue

Yours is a somewhat special case, as I think the explorer sport wiring differs from the 4 door explorer and ranger. Look under the door on the inside framerail and see if you have a G force transducer (a 2"x4" black box with a 3 wire plug). If you don't, you will have to wire that in, along with swapping out the abs module from a V8 explorer of the same year as your motor...

The 2001 Sport/Sport Trac came in a early and late model, Job 1 and Job 2 version. His is a Job 1, it was built early 2000, the early 2001-Job 1 Sport/Sport Trac was wired similarly to the Explorer 4dr it had Pats B like the Explorer and also used the 4WABS module for the VSS signal, where as the late 2001-Job 2 Sport/Sport Trac had Pats E and the VSS signal came from the PCM.

The main wiring differences will be from the Explorer C125 to the Sport C139 connector, there will be possibly a few in the Explorer C115 to Sport C110 connector. Being a early Job 1 model is a plus when doing the 5.0 swap.

In the process of finishing the wiring this weekend, got a guy on explorer forums also helping. I'll check for the gforce transducer and see if the speedometer works and report back. Thanks for the info

Goal: swapping in a V-8 into a Year 2000 Ranger 3.0 V-6 4X4 M/T Supercab

Hey SVT, any ideas as to what tye of donor vehicle to utilize for a potential swap. I want to retain the 5-speed M/T if at all possible & the selectable 2WD & both hi & low ranges of 4X4. your expertise & advixce is greatly appreciated. Bill

So this past week I swapped axles to go from the 4.10 gear to 3.73. After driving it for a few miles I've noticed it is a straight dog on the road. The motor has just over 200k miles, and I'm finding out that it was really beat on hard in the previous vehicle, which was 168k miles in that vehicle. The ex didn't have a tow hitch, so I thought it didn't have a hard life pulling trailers. It was also owned by a lady. I was wrong. Apparantly her son has borrowed/drove it quite often and dogged it out bad. So I'm coming close to time for an engine swap, and I'm at the crossroads. I want to do a supercharged 5.0, I have the supercharger, but I still need a few parts, totalling about $1025, not including the trans upgrades I will need. I'm also wanting/considering doing a 4BT diesel swap for the extra torque and fuel mileage. My truck weighs in right at 6k, tows trailers on occasion and runs about 300 miles a week. The diesel swap would be close to double the cost of the swap, but at the added benefit of the increased fuel mileage. Both will get an auto trans, the diesel will also get a gear swap. I think with the supercharger install on a different 5.0 I have, the torque will be close to the same between the two, if not more with the supercharged 5.0. Specs on the replacement 5.0 is its an 89 mustang block with about 120k, not really hard miles on this motor. Power will be expected to be between 450+ hp, 475+tq. Undecided on which way to go. Within the next year or two I'll be installing a pair of dana 60's with somewhere around 35-37's...

5.o swap

I did electrical, EEC,&AC on Lincoln/Mercury and Ford for nearly 50 years. If you take pride in your work, You repair the vehicle as good as new and looked like it did from the factory .Your work is extremely good and shows pride in your workmanship.

Hey RangerSVT, how's it goin? It has been a while for me to be on the boards. My swap is running strong still thanks to your help. I see you are doing the 4.6 swap now huh? Good stuff. What is your recipient truck going to be? I've heard the 98 year-range rangers are best preferred because they are wider at the frame rails. Kind of wish I had coils instead of torsion bars for the adjustable suspension, but hen again mine is a street truck. Are you planning to keep 4wd?

Both my sport trac and SVT was going to be the recipients, as my trac's power plant is getting and tired. SVT cause I'm going to need more power than the 5.0 can provide reliably. Plans have changed with the trac, most likely I'll be selling the trac and getting a sooper dooty since i need a bigger truck anyways (I've been towing 9,000 lbs with the trac). SVT is gonna get a custom frame, designed especially for the new axles, new suspension, and intech motor thats going in. Not sure when I'll start that, as I'm in the middle of closing out all my customers builds in preparation to move my shop. Once I get my new shop up and going, which will be going from my current 1156 sq ft to 6,000 sq ft, with room for expansion, I'll have the room for better builds. Hopefully get to continue this build by the end of summer to fall of 2015...

Congrats on the upgrade space, I am still just looking forward to getting into a new place with a garage lol. Anything wrong with modding the newer expy frame to work under a ranger? I believe they are built to house the newer 4.6's and also have Rear IFS as well, if I am not mistaken. Might make things easier unless you different plans all together.
