Whoot. People do notice when I'm gone. :D

Anyway, I got started on a wood bed for the truck. Just two layers mix and matched pieces of plywood. It's not treated, but I'm hoping some paint (once I finish) will help it out with staying solid. I'll get pics sometime in the end of the week.

You have really really got your hands full man. If those frame rails are that rotted, your brake lines are prob on the verge of popping as well. The hardware in your drum brakes is probably rotted out too. The leaf spring shackles are not much better off, as well as the leafs and the brackets. It is a real shame that this truck has so little miles on it. I think the work to make this thing see the road again is going to be very expensive and very taxing on you man. And a 8.8 should be the very last thing on your mind man. I doubt it very highly you will ever break whats under there. And even so, I think its too wide as well as you would need a custom driveshaft for the size u- joint it would take, If I remember correctly it is different. And dont forget you need to match the gearing to whats in the front rear as well.
The 8.8 wasn't a serious comment. NY has a wonderful group of inspection people. I can get this truck inspected right now if I wanted to, just add an alternator to get it running and some rear tires. All you need to do is know people. :icon_thumby:

nothing with rust passes w.v. inspection , thats what duct tape WAS for , now they just use that expanding foam for body work :icon_rofl: :icon_rofl:
My uncles old truck used to have rust holes in the side you could fit your head through. PA inspection where he lives says if a quarter fits through, it's not legal. He just duct taped the whole thing and painted the tape his body color. :icon_thumby:
 
I keep forgetting to go snap a photo. I'll try to remember when I wake up today.

Sometime I also have to remember to grab the other 2x8 from the quarry for the other bedside as well. I'd buy new, but I have to start paying my own insurance now.. my father decided to kick me off his after I backed into a 2005 Cadillac CTS today. Bad move on my part. Very bad. I would have had to start paying on mine in a month anyway, he planned on kicking me off when I turn 18 anyway.

On a serious note I'm sure you could find a solid Nissan frame somewhere, they are decently common trucks. As for the tails, I beleive that the signals need to be seen from the sides so either mount them vertically or cut out the bottoms and put in some orange plastic. As long as the drivetrain is solid just build up the body with salvage yard parts and look for a solid frame out of a rollover or something, I think the Pathfinders used the same frames.

To be honest if someone in my family could afford a new vehicle, I'd do it. Probably go with a new 4cyl/5spd Ranger. These nissans only get about 15 mpg EPA if I'm not mistaken.

Hmm.. I could do that, but I don't have a welder. I was considering buying a welder, and hacking the frame off at the cab then making one out of tube, but I'm not too sure that's legal.

Here's what I am thinking for the bedsides. It's basically going to be a 2x4, 2x8, then another 2x4. I should need six of the 2x4's and three of the 2x8's. I was originally just going to do two 2x8's but it turns out that the wheel wells are roughly 9" high so that wouldn't achieve the look and stability that I wanted.

Red is the 2x4's, blue is the 2x8's. I plan on screwing the wheel wells to the 2x8's so they don't flop around, not that they do now but I want this to be snow/mud tight. I'm still looking for a cap to put on it. Hopefully when I find one I'll get it to fit, if not.. I'll just redo the bed. To be honest, so far I have nothing into it other than some scrap wood and some extra nails.

Not sure what I want to do for the tailgate. I would like to do it in a regular tailgate style, but I am thinking I'll just go with a sliding style. Basically make two slots on each beside that the tailgate drops into. It will be stronger that way.
 
So the edit button isn't working, but I wanted to add that there will be 2x4's located at each corner, as well as behind the wheel wells. And maybe one in the center of the piece by the cab.
 
Seems like about once a month you bust out with another vehicle from your back yard... Wtf you got back there, anyway? :icon_rofl:

I assume a junk yard full of goodies.

I wish it was a junkyard full of goodies. All we have back there is the Nissan, a few old lawn mowers, an old hay wagon or log wagon or something, and a bunch of miscelanious odds and ends.

The Escort we used to have we got rid of. Sold it to some guy for 100 bucks, all he wanted was a door and a few odds and ends for a dirt track car he's building I guess. My town recently issued a "Junk Law" that states that we can't have more than one unregistered or unlicensed vehicle on our property, or excessive "junk."

They can kiss my rear end though, I'm gonna buy a parts truck for the Ranger. I knew I bought those camo tarps for a reason. :headbang:

I was also looking into buying my sisters car off her for a field beater. It's a 1993 Geo Prism. But she found someone who will trade her strait up with a Dodge Intrepid or something. He bought the car just to fix and learn about working on vehicles with and then to trash it in a field, but since she has this horrible running car and he has a nice running car.. he decided to do her a favor. Actually, he doesn't really want to. His mother works with my sister at the Hotel and she's making him trade. :D

Anyway, I finally have a job, which means I have some cashflow to put into this project. If I can get it running I will drive it in the winter instead of the Ranger AND instead of buying a Subaru. I don't need a four door, I don't have a kid.. yet.

Maybe next year I'll actually go through with my plan and get a suby. You never know.

Anyway, did a little bit of work on the Nissan today as winter is approaching. I snapped a few random pictures and a couple rust videos while I was at it.

Here's how the window WAS held shut. It's broken so it just slides down, my brother wedged a piece of wood into it to hold it shut.

There's some bolt holes on the door from the panel (he threw it out) so I stuck a long bolt in there and the window rests on it, it's only open maybe an inch now, which is a great improvement from three. That's just a temporary fix. I will be purchasing a new door for winter, as this one no longer shuts. I fixed that as well, I unbolted the door clasp and pounded it down into the door, now the door closes flush but still doesn't stay shut. I'll have to fix the drivers side somehow as well, does anyone know how to get a door off that's stuck closed?

The interior could use a good vacuuming and cleaning. It has mud in it and leaves and whatnot. My brother had a different perspective about what parts of a truck should get dirty from me. I keep the Ranger SPOTLESS in the interior.

I'll admit, I helped make it messy. But only the two tail lights chilling out in the seat.

This probably helped contribute to the rust. I'll run strait pipes (from the cat) out the back AFTER I get it inspected, if I get it road worthy. Prior to that I have an old muffler I'll toss on it with some clamps.

The entire exhaust will be CLAMPED not welded. That way, when I get pulled over for a loud exhaust I can just slap the old one on and get it checked by the local station.

Jump seats FTW! My Ranger doesn't have em. Finally I can drag more than one other person with me without me being squished, to hell with them. They can deal with the tight spaces. :D

They need a cleaning. I have a feeling there's a hole in the bottom that causes them to be dirty as hell.

Even if the truck doesn't end up being road worthy, I'll buy another one in PA or something and swap engines. PA = No salt IIRC.

So far, the list is as follows for what the truck needs.

Oil Change.It's jet black. Ew.

Air Filter.Mice got into the intake and chewed it up.

Tires.Ones missing and the rest are bald.

Brakes.Maybe.

Alternator.I still need to get that checked, it could have other problems.

Hood pins.It latches, but doesn't stay down. How much do those cost?

Battery.I have a few old ones laying around. I'll see if they'll hold a charge.

Doors.Duh.

oil change: cheap just do it
aIr filter: also cheap
tires: buy used they can be had cheap. also check scrap yards you can usually find 235/75/15's for like 50 bux a set with like 90%tread
brakes: touchy subject, get em fixed, but that wouldn't be the redneck way to do it
alternator: beats me as to how to check em, besides checkin the battery when its runnin for 14.4 volts
hood pins: nah
battery: check metal scrap yards. i got a big ass energizer for 5 bux works minty
doors:
MAKE HALF DOORS they will be cool
