Project El Taco...1990 BII

looks pretty good in their man nice work

Ok... time for an update... be it a small one...

Took the B2 on a road trip yesterday to see how it would behave on a long drive. Drove about 500 miles total, maybe a little more (lots of little misc driving involved), pretty much did washingtons part of HWY101:

Here is a pic from basically the farthest point west you can get in the continental US-

On the way up, I filled it with 92, and it ran great th whole time, hardly any hesitation, plenty of power, and got 350 miles on 19 gallons, so thats about 18.5 MPG average with LOTS of shifting, 3.73's and 34" swampers... not bad if you ask me! Then when I got south of forks, I filled up again, this time with 87 (damn station wanted over $4 a gallon for 92)... and let me tell you, what a difference.... Crapping and sputtering all over, couldnt drive it in 5th gear without it hesitating and sputtering so bad it would almost die, most of the way was 4th gear, with a lot of third in there too... still managed to squeek out about the same mileage, but the driveability was terrible, even with octane booster. Snoranger, I think your right about the detonation, im gonna try some 94 in it to see if it even clears things up further... Then it just may get my MS1 on it...

Saturday I picked up this little beauty-
DSCN0917.jpg

~$360 out the door with the 1 year guarantee, the cashier said that with the guarantee, I could bust it in front of the store and they have to give me a new one or repair this one, so Im good for awhile... plus the general lifespan of these is around 5 years if from all my research, and 90% of the people who talk about it think its the best deal out there, the other 10% just talk about how its chinese, so its terrible... Bumpers are in the near future...

Also, even though im being slow, I did get a little work done on my sliders today... Got the two rear body mount mounts done and the rails are totally ready to go, just need to get the front mounts done, run the stringers and paint them... thatll happen this week.

Congrats on the long test drive and the decent gas mileage too.

As far as detonation, You have to remember your now running 9.7:1 compression and you dont have the knock sensor to tell the comp to back down the timing. Let me know if the 94 octane helps any more then the 92.

Yeah, im thinking the the OHV ECU has a bit more timing in that part of the map, and thats what causes the problem. The OHV has a less efficient chamber and requires more timing than the SOHC. Funny part about it, is I think the computer pulls just a bit more timing when its warmer out, because I never had this issue last summer when I first got it running, only when the temps started dropping in the lowish-40's did it start to run this way. Either way, as soon as I burn the rest of the junk outta my tank, im gonna open my wallet and bend over for some 94....

Run a can of Seafoam through it also. It helped my Aunts 98 with 189,000 miles gain 2mpg.

Colder air = denser air = more oxygen per volume of air = leaner a/f mixture = more detonation.

The warm air might have been hiding the problem. Mine runs a little better in the summer then it does in the winter.

While I agree, Im not so sure its a lean/rich issue here. The ECU compensates for temperature, and will read the 02 to make sure its fueling correctly, however, timing is different. I believe the computer will add more timing when its colder out to make up for the denser, colder air/fuel mix, and I think thats what causes the hesitation when its cold, but not when its warm. However, its entirely possible Im over estimating the function of the ECU... But i would assume Ford would do whatever they could to please the EPA, and make an engine based in the 60's burn gasoline as efficiently as possible...

man pretty impressive milage for a lifted b2 looks cool man

I've been thinking about pulling the octane adjust shorting bar to see if that allows me to run a lower grade gas. I also want to see how it effects the fuel mileage. It should knock the timing down about 3°.

Got my sliders done. Also went and had a little fun in the snow up near the mountain today... It was raining and the snow was slick! Anyway, here is a few pics...

The first pics in the series were before I pulled them off, finish welded them, and painted them. They are pretty sturdy for what they are, and I think they look great.

those things look good man. and yeah, they aint going anywhere

there now you should be able to bounce off trees all you want now lol

Thats for Damn sure... I had to buy another door that will be getting put on soon... and I aint buyin another...
