Project 4x4 Commuter Mazda

Broncograveyard is who I buy most of the little stuff through. I couldn't find any bare carriers on their website, other than on loaded with 4.10 gears for $100 plus shipping...not bad considering I could possibly sell the gears.

I'll give them a call this week if the guy with the on on Ebay falls through.

Any carrier will work right (any being one that takes deep gears after the split)?

On hp d44 the carrier break is at 3.92. What are your plans for a locker? I recommend just bypassing buying a carrier and get a locker such as a detroit or yukon grizzly that replaces the carrier. But I think I remember you saying you want a selectable...

You have the OBA, might as well get the ARB.

But as far as high pinion or low pinion it doesn't matter correct? I just need one for the deeper ratios after the 3.92 break.

I was gonna go ARB, but just can't fathom the cost to do so. Aussie it will have to be since I picked one up on CL for a fair price. My mind dreams, then reality sets in and its a bitch :icon_twisted:

OBA?

OBA= on board air

Oh yeah, I feel like a dunce lol.

Having OBA already simplifies things a bit, just have to run a pressure regulator to the line going to the ARB, since my setup is wired to 120psi off, 90psi on for the compressor...I believe ARB's run on 90-100psi IIRC.

However, that doesn't solve the problem where a numerically high carrier, and an Aussie locker are about 1/3 the price of a new ARB....and I'd only go with a new one (latest P/N, new seals, newest and most current design). It's $300 if that versus about $750-$900 for and ARB. For the sake of time and money I'll settle for the Aussie....maybe later an ARB?

I hated my old Lock-Rite (on the front D35), but I have heard the Aussies are much more tolerable and less noisy. I'll take that chance to save some $$$

Welded up the axle today without incident:

Will hit the housing with a grinder and steam cleaning this week and prep for paint :icon_thumby:

It is hungry for gears and knuckles out parts....prolly start with inner seals, then u-joints, then balljoints.

But I might take a break and buy some AR15 parts this month :D

i found the link last night on MSJ, the guy got it for $60.. but it was d30 carrier.

anyways. congrats. now get that thing built and under it. i need those RA's! :icon_rofl:

The hawks are circling already above the steaming carcass of the TTB D35...and it isn't even dead yet :icon_rofl:

I was just thinking today how nice it drove and road for a 16 year old, lifted, tall, heavy, black pig that it is and how torquey it was when I got on the freeway with only 2300 RPMs to get me to the speed limit.

Ah.....it will live a bit longer what can I say..I like the way it is now :dunno:

When it comes down to it, I;ll go wheel it pretty hard a few weekends before the D44 swap, just to see how *strong* the TTB shafts are (they are already weak from the Lock-Rite abuse).

Meantime I wanna drill and tap a hole for a zerk on the rear driveline, and swap in a manual trasnfercase...get the sliders on and continue to work on its nuances.

i'm gonna make my own RA's. i have some flex joints... just gonna pick up some DOM from Spyder Offroad here local.

I like your parts chart. We are getting mostly the same parts. It looks like you are planning to get the inserts for the knuckles that you just drill out and press in for over the knuckle steering right?Do you know if those will work on the pitman arm also?

And have you talked to duff about using their trac bar mount? Also I wasn't sure a 15'' wheel would fit over the calipers on a d44, maybe I read something wrong somewhere?

Pitman arm is a no go for those inserts...not enough meat on the arm and the inserts are too tall to fit properly. Pitman arm needs to be reamed to accept larger TRE's.
