Project 4x4 Commuter Mazda

Wow. That seems familiar. All your numbers are close to what I figured for me. I got the right spring but after the breakin and weight of the winch/bumper, it is to low for me now unless I put in another space.r

You went with an XJ coil, 6.5" right? 195PPI? You like the way it rides and flexes?

My nose on my truck is probably heavier than yours too.

I can't find anything for Bronco's in the 250PPI range...it is either 190 or 300 :icon_confused: Jeep stuff tends to be in the high 100's...I'd have to make a custom lower retainer to run a Jeep coil I think.

They ride ok on the roads but are awesome off. I think I need different shocks though. I might get rid of these and to with the Rusty's 8.5" so I can get rid of the spacers.

Only problem I have is I don't have enough up travel so the shocks keep bottoming out. I need bump stops.

With the right shock, they would be perfect.

find adjustable shocks?

Do you happen to remember their free length?

195ppi sounds too soft for my situation with my heavy bumper and winch.

Would you say they sag about 6" from their free length with the weight of the truck on them?

Rustys coils are about 180ppi IIRC.

Um? I don't really remember. LOL. I guess I will have to go through my build. Or just pull a spring and measure it. I'll do that Wednesday and let you know.

Well that seems like a lot of work so don't worry about it. But if curiosity gets the best of it and you happen to take a measurement anyway, I would be very interested in knowing how much they compress. I am guessing 5-6"

I'm probably gonna go with either Bronco Graveyard's 5.5" linears or wild horse progressive 4.5" after I confirm from them what their spring rates are and I calc what the coil will do with my heavy truck...I would like something around 250PPI since I am thinking 190 Deavers would be pretty soft...and 300PPI would be theoretically more stiff than what I am running now...

Something in the realm of 220-250 PPI about 21-23" long. I think lol.

I don't really wanna run Jeep springs if I can help it, since it means I'll have to do additional modifications to seat them correctly.

I wonder what Skyjacker's, and other companies PPI's are for Early Bronco coils?

I'll see if he can find anything.

Just go coilover.

"The closest I am going to have is the 6.5 xj spring and it is 22.5 and 190 rate. If he could find a 8in xj spring it would prolly work best."
that's what he has at rough country... he's gonna check others next i think.

Thanks!

I may be picking up an Aussie Locker tomorrow in the morning off craigslist...

Scored a two year old, but never installed D44 Aussie locker off craigslist for $225 today :headbang: Blew my ball joint money, but hell this was a deal that doesn't com by very often so I had to act.

Got a quote for gears and install. Had a quote done with an ARB locker and just couldn't choke it down. So I found the Aussie instead (just on a whim, by accident really :icon_twisted: ) Pretty stoked about that.

Hopefully after taxes I can pick up some ball joints ($180), u-joints ($60) and maybe in a couple months gear it.

Greased the slip joint on my 1 pc driveline....got rid of that terrible clunk the truck has had ever since I bought it :icon_thumby:

Bad news, 4wd lights are flashing on the dash and I can't get it to engage :annoyed:

look man... you CAN gear your own axles. its not that hard.
it'd save you LOTS of money.

main thing is that you have the tools. torque wrench. bearing remover. micometer. dial indicator.
