Project 4x4 Commuter Mazda

Driveline shop won't make me a driveline that is smaller diameter. They claim it will grenade b/c of the required length. So getting a new one made that is smaller diameter to clear up my clearance issue isn't happening. I will have to modify the gas tank skid plate bracket instead (oh goody)

I almost bought a ford 8.8 today from pick n pull, but I coughed when they told me how much it would cost for an axle with shafts, differential, backing plates, and calipers. So I walked away empty handed. I can do better than $280 for a used axle.

Hello craigslist. I will just wait until I come across a good deal.

List of things to do:

idler arm
mod the gas tank skid plate
new radiator
130 or 200 amp alternator
explorer 8.8
spare D35
4.88 gears
ford 8.8 perches, shock tabs, u-bolts
back rack
brace sliders
Monstaline the rocker panels, roof, rear bumper

and most importantly, GO WHEELING THIS SUMMER!

I'll get one or two up tomorrow, it got dark on me quick :annoyed:

If gas was .25 a gallon id be there as fast as the law would let me :icon_rofl:

Made a few phone calls to pre-pulled-parts-junkyards and they all want way too much for a expo 8.8, though they are complete, low mileage and non-rusty. Most had a 6 month warranty too. Still not happy that they want $350-400 for them though.

Found a guy on craigslist that has some listed, I will call tomorrow.

i think a whole axle complete at the local pull a part is....

"REAR END (DISC BRAKE TYPE COMPLETE)"
price $89.14
warranty is an extra $17.46
and core is $25.76
http://www.pullapart.com/pricing.aspx?letter=R&loc=17&#pricelist

but usually the cashier lady (Tammy) doesn't charge me core charges.. i'm there to much.......lol

According to the chart you sent me through that link versus my chart for the pick n pull by my house:

bare axle: $5.15 vs. $55
axle shaft x 2: $ 2.58 vs $41
brake backing plate x 2: $1.03 vs $15
brake rotor x 2: $2.06 vs $24
brake caliper: $2.06 vs $21

Your total cost for the bare minimum: $~21
My cost for the bare minimum: $~257

Does that sound about right?

Sometimes I wish I lived on the east coast :annoyed:

Lol man... I like my pull a part! Lol

hm... axle shafts at $2.58 a piece.. i think i'm gonna go get me several spares

front and rear!

Man thats rediculous... Its sounds like the yards around here i paid $320 for a landcruiser axle complete but still... If i wanted corner lights they're like 50$ and you ppl are getting whole axles for that

i got all the lights off a ranger one time minus headlights for like $8.
thats both taillights, both fender lights, both turn signals.
of course i know the people there, and i usually don't pay full price of my already cheap prices.

i can get bucket seats for like $20 a piece!

Thats the only reason i wish i lived in the states... Half the cars in your junkyards are better then what ppl are driving up here.

And everything is cheap as can be at the same time.. I wanted to get the stock chrome grill and bunpers for my f150 and it was going to be like $800 for the grill the filler panep between the bunper and grill and the bumpers... Or $1800 from ford

My local yard should be renamed, Pull n be Reamed.

Thats why I'm waiting for an axle on craigslist....they junkyards are robbers just like the stealerships.

Hell through Ford Racing I could probably get a fully built, locked explorer axle for maybe $650?!

that'd be your best bet if you couldn't find one on CL lol...
but you are making me appricate my JY more and more. i've had people mad at me b/c gas is $3.39 a gallon right now, and i can get an axle shaft for $2.06! lol

Nice!

I'm just gonna bite the bullet and go buy one from my Ford recycler yard.

They have exactly what I want and they are open today.

Every time I do the math I come out ahead by buying the correct axle, instead of say finding a drum brake version and switching it to discs.

Its more money up front, but I guess it will save me the hassle of converting to discs and will save me alot of time too (pulling one myself, and searching the yards for one).

Ok, here I go, I'll post a pic of it in a bit :icon_thumby:
